The Sabres stumble to the All-Star break with the worst record in the Eastern Conference despite a 2-1 OT win over Calgary on Monday. The Oilers finally returned to relevance last season after years of struggles, but things have gone sideways in 2017-18, as they sit 12 points out of a playoff spot despite winning three straight.
Sabres vs Oilers Betting Analysis
It’s hard to stomach betting on the Sabres away from Buffalo, especially on the tail end of a back-to-back; they’ve won just 15 of their previous 60 road games, and have a minuscule 25 wins in the last 100 back-to-back finales. The Oilers, meanwhile, have struggled to follow up big games with solid efforts; they’ve lost eight of their last nine games after scoring five or more goals in their previous contests. Buffalo has won five of the last seven games in Edmonton.
Both teams have been difficult to pin down from a totals perspective. The Sabres have three overs and a push in their last four back-to-back finales, but are 4-11 O/U in their last 15 vs. teams with losing records. The Oilers have exceeded the total in five of their last seven games against Eastern Conference opponents, but had gone below in five of their previous seven contests at Rogers Arena prior to Saturday’s 5-2 triumph over Vancouver.
The Sabres are already having trouble scoring goals – they enter Tuesday ranked dead last in the NHL in offence at 2.2 goals per game – and are going to get even worse before long. Reports suggest that the Sabres haven’t talked about a new contract with second-leading scorer Evander Kane, who is in the last year of his current deal. With Kane expected to be moved prior to the trade deadline, look for Buffalo to be an even more popular target for under bettors.
Even when things go right, the Oilers can’t enjoy them. Despite playing some of its best hockey of the season, Edmonton will have to continue the good times without talented centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who is out for the next 5-to-6 weeks with cracked ribs. A playmaker for most of his career, Nugent-Hopkins has shown more goal-scoring prowess this season, leading the team with 16 tallies. The Oilers are 9-4-1 SU in games in which Nugent-Hopkins scores.
