Apple has just announced the 2022 World Wide Developers Conference will take place in June and, like the last two years’ events, will be in its online format. Here’s what we know.
When’s it happening?
Monday, June 6 through Friday, June 10, 2022. On the Monday there will be, as usual, a keynote to kick things off, and a State of the Union event for developers. Though timings have yet to be announced, it will undoubtedly be a keynote at 10AM Pacific on June 6.
Tipster Jon Prosser had claimed that this year’s WWDC would be an in-person event. I found this claim to be highly unlikely. After all, it’s not the same as the company’s product reveal events, with 1,000 press crammed into the Steve Jobs Theater. No, WWDC is where 6,000 or more developers are in close quarters with Apple’s software engineers. Covid isn’t so far in our rear mirrors that Apple would risk this. And, anyway, we know Covid is unpredictable. Of all the things Apple stages, this seemed the least likely to be in-person.
But Prosser has been proved right, even if the number of developers there in person will be much smaller than in a regular year.
How many people will be there in person?
That hasn’t been revealed. Apple has just said: “In addition to the online conference, Apple will host a special day for developers and students at Apple Park on June 6 to watch the keynote and State of the Union videos together, along with the online community. Space will be limited, and details about how to apply to attend will be provided on the Apple Developer site and app soon.”
Here’s a clue. It’s at Apple Park. I don’t believe that means in the enormous circular building that is the main building, but more likely in the Steve Jobs Theater which, as mentioned above, holds 1,000 people. So, the number will definitely be less than 1,000. Stay tuned.
How much?
This is a definite upside. Attending WWDC is not free and involves travel, hotels and the ticket to Dub-Dub itself. But, when it’s online, Apple stages it free, so as many developers as want to come can do so for nothing, online.
Since there are, Apple says, more than 30 million developers for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV, it means they can all attend if they want, and without booking a flight anywhere.

For the third year, Apple will “support students who love to code with the Swift Student Challenge. Swift Playgrounds is a revolutionary app for iPad and Mac that makes learning the Swift programming language interactive and fun. For this year’s challenge, students from around the world are invited to create a Swift Playgrounds app project on a topic of their choice, and they can submit their work through April 25. CHICAGO (AP) — United Airlines has struck a deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to offer satellite-based Starlink WiFi service on flights within the next several years.
The airline said Friday the service will be free to passengers.
United said it will begin testing the service early next year and begin offering it on some flights by later in 2025.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
The announcement comes as airlines rush to offer more amenities as a way to stand out when passengers pick a carrier for a trip. United’s goal is to make sitting on a plane pretty much like being on the ground when it comes to browsing the internet, streaming entertainment and playing games.
“Everything you can do on the ground, you’ll soon be able to do on board a United plane at 35,000 feet, just about anywhere in the world,” CEO Scott Kirby said in announcing the deal.
The airline says Starlink will allow passengers to get internet access even over oceans and polar regions where traditional cell or Wi-Fi signals may be weak or missing.
