Apple has just sent out invites to press for the next special event, expected to see the launch of the iPhone 14 (four phones) and Apple Watch (three watches). The invites mean there have been two surprises from the company.
The second surprise is that the confirmation of the event has come sooner than expected, too.
Until a week or so ago, many were betting on the following week for the event, with Tuesday, September 13 in the frame. Then two suggestions, from Max Weinbach and Mark Gurman led to a quick management of expectations.
Until today, pretty much everyone, including Mr Gurman, assumed the confirmation of the event would come on Wednesday, August 31, exactly a week before the shindig itself. Fair enough, that’s the usual timing from Apple.
But, again, Apple has caused raised eyebrows. It’s not perhaps a coincidence that in Europe at least, the focus of the tech world until a few minutes ago has been on the build-up to IFA, a huge tech expo in Berlin which rivals CES in Las Vegas. As of Apple’s announcement, that focus has suddenly swung back to Cupertino.
Oh, and the invite, which reveals as little as you’d expect from an Apple event announcement does confirm one detail and this may also be a surprise: the keynote will be in the Steve Jobs Theater, not outside as it was at WWDC.
So, what can we expect?
The iPhone 14 is a shoo-in, with four models predicted: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The most interesting, I’d say, is the all-new model. The mini that was introduced with the iPhone 12 mini and continued for the iPhone 13 mini is being retired. It’s not yet clear if the iPhone 13 mini will remain part of the range alongside the iPhone 13, but my guess is it will be.
But the new phone, which may be called iPhone 14 Max but could just as easily be the iPhone 14 Plus, will be the first time an iPhone with a 6.7-inch screen is available without the Pro moniker attached.
This seems likely to draw in a whole new range of buyers who want a big screen but don’t need the advanced features of the Pro, or can’t afford the price premium the iPhone 14 Pro Max attracts.
It will likely have an aluminum frame and two cameras, and lack the 120Hz refresh rate expected for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Many other components will be identical, but it’s thought the Pro phones will have a faster processor than the non-Pro.
How about Apple Watch?
Glad you asked. There will be, it seems, a record number of new Apple Watch models this year. The Apple Watch Series 8 will be joined by an all-new Apple Watch SE. That’s cool but the big excitement is reserved for what’s rumored to be called the Apple Watch Pro, a larger watch designed for fans of extreme sports.
Anything else?
The most likely other item is AirPods Pro second-generation, which would be very cool. Other items could be about to land, either on September 7 or in October. These will likely include new Macs, a new iPad Pro and the biggest upgrade yet to the entry-level iPad with an all-new design.
CHICAGO (AP) — United Airlines has struck a deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to offer satellite-based Starlink WiFi service on flights within the next several years.
The airline said Friday the service will be free to passengers.
United said it will begin testing the service early next year and begin offering it on some flights by later in 2025.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
The announcement comes as airlines rush to offer more amenities as a way to stand out when passengers pick a carrier for a trip. United’s goal is to make sitting on a plane pretty much like being on the ground when it comes to browsing the internet, streaming entertainment and playing games.
“Everything you can do on the ground, you’ll soon be able to do on board a United plane at 35,000 feet, just about anywhere in the world,” CEO Scott Kirby said in announcing the deal.
The airline says Starlink will allow passengers to get internet access even over oceans and polar regions where traditional cell or Wi-Fi signals may be weak or missing.
