Art Exhibit Explores Gender Stereotypes Through Fashion

A new art exhibit is exploring gender stereotypes and power imbalances through humour and fashion.

A collaboration between artists Georgia Dawkins and Kendall Sweeney, “slip into something a little more comfortable” uses drawings, screenprints and collagraph monoprints of lingerie and business suits to discuss social conformity and gender stereotypes.

Sweeney says they wanted to communicate the dynamic expectations placed on women’s wardrobes and how we personify power through clothing.

She says in many professional spaces, women wear “power suits” to feel empowered in male-dominated spaces, however, clothing like lingerie provides a different type of empowerment.

The exhibit runs until February 8 at the Corner Brook Rotary Arts Centre.
