The number of recovered cases of COVID-19 continues to inch higher locally.

Lambton Public Health said two more people have beaten the virus for a total of 254 as of Monday.

No new cases have been reported in over a week sitting at 285 and the death toll stands at 25.

Lambton Medical Officer of Health Dr. Sudit Ranade said physical distancing has been key in the battle against COVID-19.

“I think that’s a big part of it,” he said. “I think the other big part of it is the limitations on our social network. So, there are two pieces. It’s what we’re doing in the community, and what’s coming in and out of our community. Both of those pieces have slowed down a lot and I think that’s made the biggest difference.”

Dr. Ranade said the health unit will be closely monitoring the number of cases in the weeks ahead.

“When we looked around the rest of the province, certainly there have been a few clusters of cases in different places about two weeks after things started to open up. So, there was something that happened over in Kingston, and a few cases linked to a group of people in London and so we’re going to be very watchful this week and next.”

To date, the health unit has received the results from 12,080 COVID-19 tests, of which nearly 98 per cent have been negative.

Currently, there is one active institutional outbreak at Afton Park Place Long Term Care Community where one staff member has tested positive.

On Saturday, Bluewater Health declared its outbreak over. No new cases have been reported since June 17, when four staff members tested positive and began self-isolation.

Since June 15, the Sarnia hospital has not had any COVID-positive patients — 24 patients in hospital are suspected of having the virus with tests pending.
