An Edmonton-area man is the second reported presumptive case of the novel coronavirus in Alberta, the province’s chief medical officer of health confirmed Friday.
The man, who is in his 40s, had been travelling in the United States and paid visits to Michigan, Illinois and Ohio before returning to Alberta on Feb. 28. The man is now in self-isolation but the case wasn’t detected until Friday.
The latest case is less than 24 hours after the province announced a Calgary woman may have contracted the virus while on the Grand Princess cruise ship.
Dr. Deena Hinshaw told media Friday health officials only learned about the latest presumptive case about an hour prior to a scheduled news conference.
“Because this lab result just came back, we do not yet have details on this person’s activities since they returned from their trip, but I’m sharing this information in order to be transparent and to meet our goal of sharing information with the public when we have it,” she said. “I know many Albertans have concerns, we continue to treat this very seriously. I want to stress that the risk of getting sick from COVID-19 remains low at this time in Alberta.”
Hinshaw said the people travelling with the Calgary woman have not shown symptoms but the person who travelled with the Edmonton-area man has.
Following the latest developments, Hinshaw said the province will be expanding testing protocols to include any unwell travellers who left Canada. Anyone who travelled and is experiencing a fever or cough within 14 days of their return is asked to self isolate immediately and call Health Link at 811.
At the onset of the outbreak, the province was doing about 200 tests per day but Hinshaw said that will be increased, although she didn’t have an exact number.
Following the first report on Thursday, ATB Financial has voluntarily closed two branches in Calgary. Alberta Health Services (AHS) is contacting individuals who may have been exposed and are being asked to self-isolate.
Alberta health officials are currently in the process of identifying close contacts of the woman, and those people will also be asked to self-quarantine for 14 days.
Anyone in the province who has been on a Grand Princess cruise in the last two weeks is asked to self-isolate as well, and those feeling ill should contact Health Link immediately.
Hinshaw said 44 Albertans came back on Feb. 21 after being on board the Grand Princess.
The ship was barred from docking in its homeport of San Francisco this week after passengers fell ill.
Global Affairs Canada confirmed Friday morning previous passengers on the cruise liner have tested positive for COVID-19 and current passengers are being tested. Around 237 Canadians are onboard the ship.
The news of the coronavirus has led to some Albertans starting to stockpile supplies such as toilet paper, but Hinshaw said the best way to deal with the situation is to have a someone to call for assistance.
“It’s always important to have three days’ worth of supplies for any emergency, we would always recommend that but for preparedness for this particular response, my recommendation would be to think about we’re kind of calling it a buddy system,” she added.
Premier Jason Kenney reaffirmed Alberta was ready.
“The government and (Alberta Health Services), the Alberta emergency management agency have all been preparing for this since COVID19 first appeared in China back in January,” he told reporters Friday. “I understand AHS has increased its communication direction with front line physicians about measures that should be taken. The best way (for the public to) prepare themselves or to prevent contamination from this or other viruses is good hygiene, for example, staying home if they are sick.”
According to the World Health Organization, there are 98,192 confirmed cases in the world and 3,380 deaths as of Friday. There are 49 cases of COVID-19 in Canada — 26 in Ontario, 21 in British Columbia and two in Quebec, according to Health Canada.
Presumptive positive samples from provinces are sent to the National Microbiology Laboratory for further testing.
