The Edmonton Elks have welcomed two veterans back into the lineup ahead of their game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday.

Ed Gainey will start boundary halfback after missing the club’s last six games due to a chest injury, while Manny Arceneaux will start at slotback after completing a stint on the six-game injured list due to an issue with his knee. Gainey recorded four tackles and one interception during the club’s first two games of the year, while Arceneaux made four catches for 35 yards.

Canadian quarterback Tre Ford will make his first start of the season after Stephen McAdoo was demoted on Edmonton’s coaching staff during their bye week. Rookie passer Jarret Doege will serve as the primary backup behind Ford, while Taylor Cornelius has been relegated to the third-string role.

Ford completed 58 percent of his passes for 461 yards, two touchdowns, and five interceptions last season and went 1-2 as the team’s starting quarterback. The dual-threat passer also ran the ball 19 times for 149 yards.

Eugene Lewis was a limited participant in practice due to a knee injury that has held him out of the past five games. The star receiver will miss Thursday’s matchup against Winnipeg, after which he will be eligible to come off the six-game injured list. Other players who remain out for Edmonton include defensive back Aaron Grymes, defensive tackle J-Min Pelley, and strong-side linebacker Enock Makonzo.

The Elks (0-8) are scheduled to host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (6-2) on Thursday, Aug. 10 with kickoff slated for 9:00 p.m. EDT. The two teams met at IG Field in Week 7 where the Blue Bombers won by a score of 28-14. Edmonton has lost 21 consecutive home games, breaking the previous North America professional sports record of 20 set by the St. Louis Browns in 1953.
