Apple’s iOS 15.2 has finally arrived, along with some great new iPhone features. But the iOS 15.2 update also comes with fixes for a whopping 42 security vulnerabilities, some of which are serious.
Apple doesn’t tend to provide much detail about security fixes, to allow as many people to update their iPhones as possible before attackers can strike. However, some details on the iOS 15.2 security updates are now available on Apple’s support page.
Among the vulnerabilities fixed in iOS 15.2 is an issue in the Kernel, which could see a malicious application able to execute arbitrary code with Kernel privileges. The iOS 15.2 update contains fixes for some “pretty severe software flaws,” says Sean Wright, SME security lead at Immersive Labs.
He says the Kernel vulnerabilities are the most worrying, “since an attacker being able to get this level of access essentially gives them full control of your device.”
This could be made possible by chaining some of the other vulnerabilities—such as the WebKit or image flaws—which provide a practical means for exploitation, although they require sending people to a malicious site, Wright says.
Some of the vulnerabilities patched in iOS 15.2 have the potential to leak user and device information, while another worrying bug could allow someone to view stored passwords in Apple’s Password Manager, Regina Bluman, security program manager at Algolia says. “Though physical access is needed, an attacker could still bypass authentication and read saved passwords—a big risk when you consider how often phones are stolen.”
Update to 15.2 as soon as possible
None of the vulnerabilities fixed in iOS 15.2 are known to have been used to attack iPhones yet. But given the number and seriousness of the issues, experts advise updating your iPhone to iOS 15.2 now if you can.
Apple is also updating iOS 14 with important patches for those who want to stay away from iOS 15, but the fixes are not as substantial as those offered for iOS 15, and tend to be offered at a later date.
Bluman and Wright point out that a lot of businesses will be focused on Log4Shell right now. Even so, “it’s worth updating to iOS 15.2 as quickly as possible,” says Bluman.

CHICAGO (AP) — United Airlines has struck a deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to offer satellite-based Starlink WiFi service on flights within the next several years.
The airline said Friday the service will be free to passengers.
United said it will begin testing the service early next year and begin offering it on some flights by later in 2025.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
The announcement comes as airlines rush to offer more amenities as a way to stand out when passengers pick a carrier for a trip. United’s goal is to make sitting on a plane pretty much like being on the ground when it comes to browsing the internet, streaming entertainment and playing games.
“Everything you can do on the ground, you’ll soon be able to do on board a United plane at 35,000 feet, just about anywhere in the world,” CEO Scott Kirby said in announcing the deal.
The airline says Starlink will allow passengers to get internet access even over oceans and polar regions where traditional cell or Wi-Fi signals may be weak or missing.
