Hip-hop icon LL Cool J has inserted himself into the ongoing rap battle between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, offering some veteran advice to the former during a recent interview. LL, promoting his upcoming album release, weighed in on the much-publicized feud, urging Drake to maintain a positive attitude and focus on the music.
LL Cool J: The Beef Goes Too Far When Rappers Take Themselves Too Seriously
LL Cool J, known for his upbeat persona, expressed his belief that today’s rappers take themselves and their rivalries a bit too seriously. In his opinion, the emphasis should be on the music itself, not taking potshots at each other.
“When it’s really just about the music and the bars, like don’t take it so personal,” LL stated in the interview. “Like why tf are you so butt hurt that you wanna kill everything moving.”
The rap veteran acknowledged that he understands the frustrations some artists experience in feuds, but emphasized the importance of maintaining composure. “You can’t really judge them because I been there,” he admitted.
LL Offers Sympathy to Drake Over “Not Like Us” Diss
LL continued by referencing the dissonance between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. He suggested that the success of Kendrick’s diss track, “Not Like Us,” must be particularly stinging for Drake. LL offered words of encouragement to Drake, advising him to brush it off and move forward.
LL Cool J’s upcoming album, “The FORCE,” is scheduled to be released on September 6th. This will be his first album in over a decade, following the 2013 release of “Authentic.”
LL Crowns Kendrick Lamar the Victor, But Praises Drake’s Performance
In a previous interview on Hot 97, LL Cool J declared Kendrick Lamar the victor in the ongoing feud. He even suggested that Drake made a strategic misstep by taking aim at the Compton rapper. However, LL also acknowledged Drake’s talent and praised his performance within the battle.
“Both of them are super talented, they both did great,” he told the host. “It ain’t like Drake completely and utterly played himself…”
LL furthermore complimented both rappers, recognizing the impact the battle will have on their legacies. “Both of their names will be etched in history because of it,” he asserted.
LL Cool J: Keeping it Positive in His Later Years
LL Cool J, at a more seasoned stage in his own career, revealed his preference for maintaining a positive outlook towards his peers. “I don’t even wanna go there,” he explained in the interview. “I wanna keep things positive energy. No problem, no fake tough guy bullsh*t.”
LL backed up his claims by addressing the long-standing rumor of a past beef with JAY-Z. While admitting they exchanged bars back in 1996, LL clarified that he was lyrically spent at the time, coming off an album cycle. He also denied taking subtle jabs at JAY-Z on his song “Loungin’.”
LL Cool J admitted to having been in similar situations himself, forced to endure disses aimed at him. “I get it,” he told Charlamagne. “I been there, I know it. It can be upsetting… But you gotta control that.”
