The Quinte region’s COVID-19 numbers grew again Thursday with an additional three lab-firmed cases reported by Hastings Prince Edward Public Health.
The new cases – two attributed to travel with the other being community-based – brings the confirmed cases in the region to 16. The number of probable cases sits at 254 with Public Health, on its website, noting technical issues were delaying an update on the number of probable cases.
A probable case is considered a person exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 who has travelled outside Canada, has had close contact with a confirmed or probable case of COVID-19, or has had close contact with a person who has acute respiratory illness and has travelled outside Canada within 14 days prior to the onset of illness.
Provincially, Ontario’s number of confirmed cases grew by 401 Thursday bringing the provincial total to 2,793.
Premier Doug Ford, during a press conference Thursday, recognized the dire situation in the province and, as he has done often, encouraging residents to stay home in a bid to avoid contracting the “terrible, terrible virus.”
“The situation is extremely, extremely serious,” Ford said. He again stressed the need for residents to adhere to health officials’ warnings and stay home as “it’s a matter of life and death.”
Ford said he wants to ensure all Ontario residents are as well-informed as possible regarding the situation and the numbers in the province. In a bid to do that, he said, the province’s top medical professionals will join him Friday (today) in a press conference where more information will be available. Ford hinted the figures and facts which will be presented won’t be pretty.
“Over the next little while we’re all going to have to make some tough decisions,” the premier said. “Avoiding the tragedy we’ve seen in Italy and Spain will be up to all of us.”
Part of Thursday’s press conference included Ford’s announcement of $12 million for mental health due to the stress COVID-19 is creating in people’s lives.
“Social isolation can be hard on everyone,” Ford said. ‘During these difficult days we all need to stick together.”
Locally, Dr. Piotr Oglaza, Hastings Prince Edward Public Health (HPEPH) medical officer of health and CEO, will participate in his second live Facebook broadcast Friday. During this event he will be sharing information and advice about the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as answering questions in real time.
