Male charged over social media video
A Guelph male is facing a threats charge following investigation of a video posted recently to social media.
On December 12, members of the Guelph Police Services General Investigations Unit began an investigation involving the video, which depicted a male threatening an individual and further conveying racist ideology.
As a result of the investigation, a 28-year-old Guelph male was charged on Friday with uttering a threat to cause death. He will appear in bail court Tuesday. It is important to note that hate and/or bias has been recognized by police as a contributing factor in this case.
Weapons, drug charges following RIDE stop
A Hamilton male faces weapons and drug charges after being stopped at a RIDE spot check in Guelph Saturday night.
Guelph Police Service officers were conducting a RIDE program on Wellington Street East near Neeve Street when they stopped a motor vehicle approximately 10:40 p.m. A long machete-style knife was observed to the left of the driver’s seat, which the driver advised he needed for protection. A strong odour of cannabis was also detected inside the vehicle.
A search of the vehicle revealed 45 grams of cannabis as well as numerous empty baggies.
A 40-year-old Hamilton male is charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possessing cannabis for the purpose of selling and driving a motor vehicle with cannabis readily available. He will appear in a Guelph court February 8, 2022.
Male arrested after business entered, car stolen
A Guelph male faces several charges after a business was entered and a car stolen from the premises Friday morning.
A business in the area of Edinburgh Road North and Paisley Street was entered just before 4:30 a.m. on Friday after a window was broken. A car belonging to a customer of the business was missing.
Officers were able to identify a suspect from surveillance photos. He was located at an address on Willow Road and arrested. The vehicle was recovered.
A 30-year-old Guelph male is charged with break and enter, possessing stolen property over $5,000, possessing stolen property under $5,000, theft and three counts of breaching probation. He will appear in a Guelph court January 7, 2022.
Erratic driving leads to impaired charge
A Guelph male was arrested for impaired driving Sunday evening after officers observed his vehicle being driven erratically.
Police were notified approximately 7:20 p.m. of a possible impaired driver on Victoria Road South near Arkell Road, and located the vehicle a short time later driving on York Road. Officers observed the vehicle swerving within and outside its lane while driving very slowly.
A traffic stop was initiated and officers immediately detected a strong odour of alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle. The driver was unable to maintain eye contact with officers and struggled to follow simple commands.
He was arrested and taken to the police station, where testing confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.
A 51-year-old Guelph male is charged with impaired driving. His driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for seven days. He will appear in a Guelph court January 4, 2022.
Commercial building entered again
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a commercial building was broken into for the second time this month.
On Sunday afternoon, police were called to a building housing several businesses in the area of Willow Road and Silvercreek Parkway North. An employee of one business in the building had arrived to find pry marks on the door. Officers identified two businesses that had entered and three others where attempts were made. It is not yet known if anything was stolen.
Three businesses in the same building were entered earlier this week, with thousands of dollars in computers and other equipment stolen during those incidents. It is not known if they are related.
