Microsoft is planning to replace contracted journalists with robots. This was reported to Seattle Times by sources in the company.
“Like all companies, we regularly evaluate our business. This can lead to increased investments in some places and, from time to time, to redistribution in others. These decisions are not the result of the current pandemic,” the company said.
Automated systems for selecting news will carry out the tasks of selecting headlines and photos for the MSN website, which are now handled by journalists from various organizations.
Microsoft, like some other technology companies, pays news organizations to use their content on their website.
But journalists decide which news to publish and how they will be presented.
In connection with the reorganization, about 50 news producers will lose their jobs at the end of June. However, a team of full-time journalists will remain.
Some journalists warn that artificial intelligence may not be fully familiar with strict editorial rules and may ultimately select inappropriate material.

TORONTO – While video games may occupy an outsized piece of today’s entertainment landscape, they have not extinguished the appeal to their ancestors. A visit to a board game cafe, casino or even a cottage on a long weekend will provide ample evidence of traditional games still being enjoyed in all their tactile glory.
Restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, have made enjoying a live board game or round of cards more difficult. Some potential players might be isolating on their own while others might not have an old chess set or backgammon table to help pass the time. In addition, many places where game enthusiasts would normally congregate to match wits remain closed.
The release of a video game compilation of popular board and card games would seem well-timed, given current circumstances. “Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics,” out this week for the Nintendo Switch, collects some of the all-time legendary pastimes — checkers, chess, backgammon, poker — and bolsters the package with a diverse selection of popular games from around the world.
Digital versions of classic games are far from a new idea — the “Clubhouse Games” brand itself debuted in 2006 on the handheld Nintendo DS system — but the roster included in this title as well as the options for solo or multiplayer competition are impressive.
Many of the games on offer will be familiar, including dominoes, Chinese checkers and versions of “Connect 4,” “Mastermind” and “Yahtzee.”
There are also some that might be new to North American gamers but have large followings elsewhere in the world, including: Mancala, a centuries-old strategy game; Ludi, a game of Indian origin; and Shogi, also known as Japanese chess.
The 11 card games available include casino classics Texas Hold ’em and blackjack, as well as Japanese favourites Pig’s Tail and Hanafuda.
Pool (both 8- and 9-ball varieties), darts, golf, bowling and air hockey are among the sports offerings. Solo gamers can play three types of solitaire as well as a sliding puzzle.
A slot-car racing simulator is also included. If you have access to multiple Nintendo Switch consoles, they can be placed next to each other in ‘mosaic mode’ to allow for increasingly complex track designs to stretch across the screens.
The individual games are well presented with easy-to-use controls, and each has a comprehensive tutorial to help players unfamiliar with the concept or rules quickly learn the ropes.
Not confident in going head-to-head with a human opponent? The games can also be played against opponents controlled by the game’s artificial intelligence, with different difficulty settings available.
Games can be played by multiple players either online, by sharing a Switch console, or on multiple Switch consoles on a local area network. Some games like Texas Hold ’em, which require players to keep their cards concealed from their opponents, cannot be played on a single Switch.
While the game is heavy on content, it also comes with an attractive sticker price. Nintendo’s website lists the suggested retail price at $49.99 — around $30 cheaper than a triple-A new release.
Of course, a video game can’t duplicate everything that playing a game head-to-head with a live opponent offers.
There is no real substitute to looking an opponent in the eye as you make the last checkers jump or declaring “Checkmate” while placing your winning piece with a declarative thud.
But this compilation has plenty to offer at a fair price, and at least no one has to put all the pieces away when the game is over.

Android 11 change causes apps to force quit when installing APKs – MobileSyrup
Android 11 will bring a lot of changes when it arrives, but one significant security change could shake up the way people install apps from third-party sources.
According to details from a Google Issue Tracker thread, Android 11 will force-close apps after users grant permission to install unknown apps. For those unfamiliar with the term, Android has offered the ability to install apps through ‘APK’ files for some time. That means anyone can download an APK from outside the Play Store and install it on their phone.
As a security measure, to install an APK through a third-party app, users need to permit it to install ‘unknown apps.’ For example, if you download an APK with your web browser, it won’t let you install it without permission for your web browser to handle unknown apps.
On Android 10 and older, this process was quite simple. Users downloaded an app, a pop-up would say they need to grant permission. Tapping the ‘Settings’ button in the pop-up would send users to the app’s settings so they could enable the permission. Then, tapping or swiping to go back would generate a second pop-up asking to install the APK.
Android 11 completely disrupts that process. Instead of letting users head back to the app to finish the installation, it will force close that app once users grant it the permission. Then, you have to head back to the app and start the process over from the beginning.
Android 11’s new Scoped Storage system causes the issue
After some back-and-forth between testers and Googlers in the Issue Tracker thread, the search giant finally provided some more detail about what was causing the problem. Essentially, the issue stems from Android 11’s new ‘Scoped Storage’ file management system. Below is the full explanation from Google:
“The way the filesystem and storage mounts are setup in Android R has changed significantly. When an app starts without this permission, it gets a view of the filesystem that doesn’t allow writing to certain directories (eg Android/obb). Once the app has been granted this permission, that view is no longer accurate, and needs to be updated to a view that allows the app to write to certain directories. With the way the filesystem has been setup in R, changing that view on the fly is not possible. As mentioned in comment #16, we’re evaluating internally. I’m just providing additional details why this doesn’t work the way it did on Q.”
Scoped Storage, for the unfamiliar, changes how Android apps can access storage. At a base level, it provides each app an isolated section of storage and limited access to the Android filesystem, instead of granting full access like Android currently does.
On the privacy front, this is a critical change that could prevent apps from snooping around your files. However, Scoped Storage also comes with some issues, such as reduced read and write speeds. And, of course, this makes the process of installing APKs more complicated.
Hopefully Google can develop a solution that means Android doesn’t have to force-quit apps. However, it’s also likely that this problem isn’t high on Google’s priority list. Since users only need to grant permission once per app, they’ll only experience one force-close. The flip side of that, however, is that some people like to keep that permission disabled except for when they need it, which could mean having to force quit an app every time they want to adjust that permission, which also isn’t ideal.
