Moe visiting Prince Albert as Saskatchewan election campaign continues

Saskatchewan Party Leader Scott Moe is scheduled to make an announcement in Prince Albert this morning as the Oct. 28 election draws closer.

Moe is set to visit area businesses later in the day.

As for the New Democrats, leader Carla Beck is set to speak outside the legislature in Regina.

Both parties spent Wednesday addressing health care.

Beck promised to get emergency rooms back on track, saying the Saskatchewan Party refuses to admit there’s a problem.

Moe said he would expand a health-care plan he announced two years ago to hire more workers, while shooting back at the NDP for not being forthright with how much their plan would cost.

Toronto city council is granting the island airport a lease extension that would keep the hub open for at least another two decades.

In a 17-8 vote on Wednesday, councillors passed a motion by Mayor Olivia Chow that could see the agreement governing Billy Bishop airport expire as late as 2045, up to 12 years later than planned.

The tripartite deal between the city, PortsToronto and the federal government had been set to end in 2033.

The motion comes despite the mayor’s approval last week of a staff report that advised against drawing out the agreement before more public consultation.

The PortsToronto federal agency that oversees the airport had argued a longer lease was essential to secure financing for construction of safety zones at either end of the runway, in line with updated federal rules.

Located near downtown, the airport has proven a point of controversy over the decades, with backers pointing to economic benefits and skeptics warning of the risk to waterfront revitalization and new housing.

TORONTO – Shares of Toronto-Dominion Bank were down in early trading following reports the bank is nearing a settlement with U.S. regulators regarding failures of its anti-money laundering safeguards.

Multiple media reports said the bank will pay billions in financial penalties as well as face non-financial sanctions that will put limits on its growth in the U.S.

TD has said it will hold a conference call later today, but did not offer details regarding what the call would be about.

The Canadian bank has been working to resolve investigations into failures in its anti-money laundering program in the U.S.

The probes have been a major overhang for the bank and helped scuttle its proposed US$13.4-billion acquisition of U.S. bank First Horizon Corp.

TD shares were down $5.78, or about 6.6 per cent, at $81.33 by late morning on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
