Oilers GM confident in Tippett, not planning on coaching change –

The Edmonton Oilers are confident they’ll turn their season around under coach Dave Tippett, general manager Ken Holland said Tuesday.

“We’re going to start to win,” Holland said. “I believe in the coach. I believe in the team. I believe in the leadership of the team. I believe in their determination.

“If we can win a couple of games, [we’ll] get our swagger back a little bit and feel good about ourselves and start to ride the wave. Right now it’s going downhill in the wrong direction and we’ve got to turn this thing around. I believe we’re going to get going here.”

Edmonton (18-14-2) have not won in five games and are 2-9-2 in their past 13 games after a 16-5-0 start. Its .762 points percentage on Dec. 2 was the best in the NHL.

Holland, who was named Oilers GM prior to the 2019-20 season, has never changed a coach in-season during a managerial career that started with Detroit Red Wings in 1997.

“I don’t believe in it, I guess, but I also understand there are times when possibly it needs to be done or it should be done,” he said.

“On Dec. 2, we were first place in the NHL overall. We’ve had a bad five weeks. There’s been seven coaches here in 10 years. You can’t just keep whipping through coaches.”

Since the start of the 2010-11 NHL season, Tom Renney, Ralph Krueger, Dallas Eakins, Todd Nelson, Todd McLellan and Ken Hitchcock coached the Oilers. Renney (164), Eakins (113) and McLellan (266) are the ones other than Tippett (161) to coach more than 100 games with them.

Tippett is 90-58-13 with Edmonton and coached the Oilers to the postseason each of the past two seasons. Edmonton lost in four games to the Chicago Blackhawks in the best-of-5 Stanley Cup Qualifiers in 2020 and was swept by the Winnipeg Jets in the best-of-7 Stanley Cup First Round last season.

This season, the Oilers were outscoring opponents by an average of 3.81-2.90, with the NHL’s top power play (35.9 percent) and the fourth-best penalty kill (87.7 percent) in 21 games through Dec. 2.

Since then, Edmonton has allowed the first goal in 12 of its past 13 games and has been outscored by an average of 3.85-2.38. The power play is 18.8 percent (21st) and the penalty kill is 68.4 percent (29th).

The Oilers have allowed the first goal in 24 of 34 games this season, most in the NHL.

The struggles have not convinced Holland that the Oilers need to mortgage the future to right the present, even with the presence of two of the best players in the NHL, forwards Connor McDavid and Leon Draissaitl.

Holland said sacrificing prospects or high draft picks for a rental player is not the most conducive path to shoring up Edmonton’s foundation for success.

“I wouldn’t do that,” Holland said. “I think the answer’s in that locker room. Why would I trade a first-round pick or one of our top prospects to have somebody give us a little bit of a boost and then next year we have a press conference and you’re asking me about more secondary scoring again, or more depth?”

McDavid and Draisaitl share the NHL scoring lead with 53 points each, McDavid with 19 goals and 34 assists in 33 games, and Draisaitl with 26 goals and 27 assists in 34 games.

“Now, I understand Connor’s 25 (years old) and Leon’s 26, and would I trade something if it’s a hockey trade and you bring in somebody and he’s [here] this year and beyond? That’s a different story. But if your question is to just trade some Grade A prospect to give a little bit of a boost and a bump so we can have another press conference next week, and then that guy goes on and flourishes in another organization somewhere else for five, six, seven, eight, 10 years, and we’re back to the market next year because that person leaves, I’m not doing that.”

Edmonton plays the Ottawa Senators on Saturday, its first game since a 4-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Jan. 5. Its next four games were postponed because of attendance restrictions in Canada cities.

“I’m not sure where we’re at because we’ve been in such extremes the first 21 games versus the last 13,” Holland said. “But I believe we have a good team. …

“I understand that we’re in pro hockey and we’re judged on wins and losses and we haven’t won enough, but I believe [in] the coaching staff, the team is playing hard, they’re competing every night. We’ve got a bit of break here and I hopefully am going to talk to [Tippett] and a few of the players, make a couple of tweaks, (hopefully we) get people out of COVID, get our team back and let’s see how we can do.”

The Oilers have McDavid, forwards Warren Foegele, Tyler Benson and Derek Ryan, and defenseman Tyson Barrie in NHL COVID-19 protocol.

Holland said he’s been having conversations with GMs but isn’t sure a trade would be the path to putting the Oilers back on track.

“I am working the phones, but for right now, today, the solution has to be in that locker room,” Holland said. “We’re better than what we’ve been playing, I believe that, and I don’t know that I could go out and make some big trade to kind of turn things around, but I am talking to teams.”

Oilers place goaltender Stuart Skinner in COVID-19 protocol –

The Edmonton Oilers have placed goaltender Stuart Skinner in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol, the team announced Monday.

The Oilers are now down two goalies, with Mike Smith sidelined one to two weeks with an injured thumb.

Edmonton’s No. 1 option between the pipes is now Mikko Koskinen, who’s posting a .900 save percentage this season and last earned a win on Dec. 1. After a promising start to the season, the Oilers are plummeting down the standings — currently four points outside a wild-card spot and without a win in their last six games.

Skinner, 23, was given the chance as the No. 1 starter after Smith went down with an injury, but allowed five goals on 25 shots against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. He has four wins, six losses and a .907 save percentage so far this season.

The Oilers’ next game is on Thursday against the Florida Panthers.

Prescott on Cowboys fans throwing debris at refs: 'Credit to them' – theScore

Dak Prescott seemingly applauded the Dallas Cowboys fans who threw debris at officials Sunday after their wild-card loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

The quarterback initially thought spectators were showering Cowboys players with garbage before reporters informed him the trash was intended for the referees.

“Oh, well, credit to them, then,” Prescott said, according to WFAA’s Mike Leslie.

Prescott was offered a chance to clarify his remark at the end of his postgame press conference but chose not to, according to Leslie.

Dallas lost moments before the debris was thrown, as the driving Cowboys failed to spike the ball while the final seconds ticked off the clock. Dallas lined up to snap the ball, but an official bumped into Prescott from behind and couldn’t spot the ball in time.

“The fans felt the same way as us,” Prescott said, according to the Dallas Morning News’ Michael Gehlken. “I guess that’s why the refs took off and got out of there so fast. I think everybody is upset with the way this thing played out.”

Referee Alex Kemp said afterward the officials operated properly and spotted the ball correctly.

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy was also frustrated by the way the final seconds played out.

“We shouldn’t have had any problem getting the ball spotted there,” he said, per CBS Sports.
