A journalistic project by Postmedia Calgary focusing on the city’s downtown has been nominated for an international award.
Downtown Turnaround explored the challenges faced in Calgary’s core and the search for solutions.
One portion of Downtown Turnaround involved a social media project, in which Postmedia Calgary (Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun) talked to 24 Calgarians and community leaders who work, play and/or live in downtown Calgary. They were each asked for one idea that could improve the core. Postmedia then published one idea an hour on Twitter and Facebook — with additional publication on Instagram — in a feature called 24 Hours, 24 Voices, 24 Ideas to Build a Better Downtown.
The International News Media Association (INMA) recognized that work Wednesday, naming the feature a finalist in the Best Use of Social Media category in its Global Awards competition. Other finalists in that category are media organizations in Brazil, Germany, Argentina and India.
Some 54 media experts from 20 countries judged the entries in February, evaluating on breakthrough results, unique concepts, strong creativity, innovative thinking and winning synergies across platforms. The awards attracted 775 entries from 239 news brands in 40 countries, with finalists hailing from Africa, Asia/Pacific, Europe, Latin America, South Asia and North America.
