For the last decade, Samsung has been working two different product lines at the top of its smartphone portfolio. Now it looks like the South Korean company’s break-neck pace of a new flagship every six months is about to come to an end.

Although the provisional launch date for a Galaxy Note in 2021 is some time away (mid-August 2021 would fit with previous launches) there is almost no chatter from the supply chain around the Note 21. That’s unusual. Meanwhile the Galaxy S field is pointing towards new hardware support in the upcoming flagship. Asif Shaik reports for SamMobile:
“The Galaxy S21 Ultra is expected to feature support for the S Pen. Even the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is rumored to bring support for Samsung’s stylus. All of this points towards the possible end of the Galaxy Note series. Putting an end to the Galaxy Note series could mean better things for the S Pen, streamline Samsung’s flagship smartphone lineup, and give the company more time to improve its software.”
The Galaxy Note was launched in 2011. It stood out from the crowd, with its massive 5.3 inch screen and built in S-Pen stylus. This was a large twist on the smartphone. It provide a huge amount of screen real estate, a new way of interacting with content, and could be seen as a play for the ‘office’ as much as the Galaxy S handsets pitched for ‘casual’.
Since then the smartphone equivalent of Moore’s Law has been apparent, and the Galaxy S handsets have been inching closer and closer towards the Galaxy Note remit. Putting this year’s Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy S20 handsets next to each other and there’s very little to differentiate between the handsets apart from the incremental gains of six months research and development.

With next year’s Galaxy S21 expected to support the S-Pen, the Note design has but one advantage left… it has a physical port to store the S-Pen. That’s cute, but not really a lot.

CHICAGO (AP) — United Airlines has struck a deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to offer satellite-based Starlink WiFi service on flights within the next several years.
The airline said Friday the service will be free to passengers.
United said it will begin testing the service early next year and begin offering it on some flights by later in 2025.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
The announcement comes as airlines rush to offer more amenities as a way to stand out when passengers pick a carrier for a trip. United’s goal is to make sitting on a plane pretty much like being on the ground when it comes to browsing the internet, streaming entertainment and playing games.
“Everything you can do on the ground, you’ll soon be able to do on board a United plane at 35,000 feet, just about anywhere in the world,” CEO Scott Kirby said in announcing the deal.
The airline says Starlink will allow passengers to get internet access even over oceans and polar regions where traditional cell or Wi-Fi signals may be weak or missing.
