One thing that Bethesda was pushing pretty hard in Starfield ahead of launch was the ability to make your own ship, or heavily customize existing ones. While yes, you can do this, and make some very cool things (Battlecruiser, operational) the system in which to do this is not explained very well at all (like most things in the game).
As such, I figured I would chime in here with some Starfield ship-building advice which I’ve discovered across three playthroughs here, which should help things a bit.
Easy Module Attachment – Buying a part of a ship and trying to drag it around in the bizarre 3D space system of the builder is awful and will rarely work. What you should do instead is hover over the circular attachment point where you want to put something and then hit “G” (not sure of console button for any of this) to start attaching from the existing categories. Depending on the piece, that may only be weapons, or it may be the full range of parts from the ship. You need to attach it directly to that junction this way, or it’s going to be a huge pain most of the time.
Moving WeaponsAround – For whatever reason, you simply cannot drag weapons to other locations on the ship most of the time, possibly because of the 3D system. Instead, what you need to do is delete them, then find the connection point you want them at, hit G, and then find them from the list. This is true of any part you delete, and don’t worry, this does not cost you any additional money. You will know which piece it is by the “+” sign next to the price on the list, meaning that’s the thing you want to reinstall.

Different Ports Have Different Ship Building Parts – You have probably figured out that each port with a Ship Services person has different ships for sale. What you may not realize is that each port also has a range of different parts to build out your ship from different manufacturers. Most ports will usually have two different body part manufacturers, HopeTech, Deimos, etc. Getting to some of the more unique vendors like the Crimson Fleet will get you really specialized parts like shielded cargo bays for smuggling.
How To Rank Up Starship Engineering Fast – The way you progress through the ranks of Starship engineering and into the best parts is that you have to install “unique” modules on your ships. This can take forever and be pretty pricey, so what I did is just make a “Frankenstein” ship. I took the first (pretty bad) ship and deleted a bunch of parts, replacing them with cheap, 400 credit cosmetic parts, while making sure the ship could still function. Then I saved the build and would get 4-5 new modules every time I did this. Then you delete and do it again with different parts. It may cost 10-20K by the time you’re done with this, but it’s a way to get to the good parts more quickly. Remember different ports have different parts to do this faster if you’re running low on unique, cheap parts.
Building A Ship From Scratch – So you can do this, but not in the way you might think. There is no “start new ship” option, but you can take a ship, essentially delete literally everything about it, and start over that way. It does not have to be the same class, as a new reaction can upgrade it to B, C whatever. As much as you may think deleting a ship is bad to do this, there are loads of crappy ships you can steal/hijack essentially anywhere, and that’s all you need to get started. Yes, it’s a weird system.
Classes B and C Aren’t Necessarily Better Than A – I know you start with class A ships, and have to upgrade to class B and C. By the time you get to C, you are seeing some massive, impressive ships. Yes, those are very cool, however, it’s not necessarily the case that class B and C ships are better than A, because there are significant tradeoffs. A C ship may be a tank, but an A ship is more like a fighter jet, and is going to be highly maneuverable for space combat with low weight, tight turning and high speed. And you can put some sick weapons on them. Of course, you are more vulnerable with a lower HP hull and shield. But it’s not a “one is better outright” situation.
CTRL+Z – It undoes things you’ve done, just like normal. Helpful when sometimes you delete something and it accidentally takes another part with it.
CHICAGO (AP) — United Airlines has struck a deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to offer satellite-based Starlink WiFi service on flights within the next several years.
The airline said Friday the service will be free to passengers.
United said it will begin testing the service early next year and begin offering it on some flights by later in 2025.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
