Trudeau to attend General Assembly where Biden set to make final UN speech

Published

 on

NEW YORK – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to attend the opening of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, where U. S. President Joe Biden will give a speech as tensions in the Middle East and Russia’s war in Ukraine cast a shadow over the global gathering.

It will be the president’s last time addressing the general assembly and a senior administration official speaking on background says it will reflect Biden’s vision for how the world comes together to solve problems.

The official says when Biden came to office nearly four years ago, he pledged to restore American leadership on the world stage and the address is a chance for him to talk about how that promise has produced results.

Biden removed himself from the U.S. presidential race in July amid growing concern over his mental acuity and ability to win following a disastrous debate with former Republican president Donald Trump.

Vice-President Kamala Harris has since ascended to the top of the Democratic ticket ahead of the razor-thin race to the White House in November.

Trump has often campaigned on America taking a step back from its role on the global stage, but Biden’s official says the president’s speech to the yearly gathering of world leaders at the UN will show why that’s the wrong approach.

Meanwhile, Trudeau arrived in New York on Sunday and delivered remarks to the Summit of the Future, telling leaders they can choose to stick their heads in the sand or come together to confront global challenges.

He is scheduled to have an armchair discussion with Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley on Tuesday ahead of a meeting with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

Trudeau will attend high-level meetings about innovating for a sustainable future and fighting against extremism, as well as hold a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Zelenskyy is set to address a special meeting of the UN Security Council Tuesday about Russia’s ongoing invasion in his country. Zelenskyy is scheduled to speak again to the general assembly the next morning.

Russia has a permanent seat on the Security Council and has been resoundingly criticized over its aggression in Ukraine being a violation of the UN Charter.

Last year Zelenskyy took center stage at the UN, but this year the conflict in the Middle East also weighs heavy at the annual gathering.

Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, is scheduled to address world leaders on Tuesday afternoon. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are expected to speak Thursday.

It has become a more difficult global environment over the past year, Biden’s official noted, but that underscores the need for partnership.

“We need to continue working together,” the official said.

Trudeau has spent much of his time in New York making the case for global leaders to think about the future. His remarks to the Summit of the Future told leaders to come together and adopt the “Pact of the Future,” a 42-page blueprint to address a wide range of 21st-century global challenges.

While the pact was ultimately approved, it received significant pushback from Russia, Saudi Arabia and other countries that object to some of the language on issues including climate change and reforming international financial institutions.

Trudeau also spoke about future generations while asserting why leaders should put more support into stabilizing Haiti as the Caribbean country sees hunger, displacement and violence from a scourge of gangs that have been emboldened by political upheaval.

“We must ensure that everyone, particularly the next generation of Haitians, are offered a better and brighter future,” Trudeau said Monday during the high-level meeting for a United Nations advisory group for Haiti.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly will deliver Canada’s national statement later during the UN General Assembly as Trudeau returns to Canadian soil. The speech will emphasize “Canada’s commitment to promoting multilateral co-operation, human rights, democracy and the rule of law,” a news release from her office said.

The Trudeau government is expected to face its first test in the House of Commons this week since the NDP ended its supply-and-confidence deal with the Liberals.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has said he plans to table a motion stating the House has no confidence in the government or the prime minister.

The New Democrats and Bloc Québécois have said they intend to vote against the Conservatives, which will end the prospects of a snap election.

FAMU postpones upcoming home game against Alabama A&M because of threat of Helene

Published

 on

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida A&M University postponed its upcoming college football game against Alabama A&M because of Tropical Storm Helene.

The Rattlers rescheduled the game for Friday, Nov. 29, in anticipation of Helene strengthening into a major hurricane Wednesday while moving north toward the United States. Several models have Helene making landfall just south of Tallahassee.

Florida State, meanwhile, might need to adjust its travel schedule before playing at SMU on Saturday.

“We’re continuing to track that. There’s still a lot of information (to come),” Seminoles coach Mike Norvell said Tuesday. “Today is a big day for gaining more information of what could be our reality. I feel good about the plans that we have. I feel good about any potential adjustments, if necessary. But it’s something that we’re absolutely tracking.”

Helene formed into a tropical storm Tuesday in the Caribbean Sea. Hurricane watches were issued for parts of Cuba, Mexico and a stretch of the Florida coastline, including Tampa Bay, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. A tropical storm warning has been issued for parts of the Florida Keys.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency Monday in dozens of counties ahead of its arrival.

Helene could strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane before approaching the northeast Gulf Coast. Since 2000, eight major hurricanes have made landfall in Florida, according to Philip Klotzbach, a Colorado State University hurricane researcher.

Given the anticipated large size, storm surge, wind and rain will extend far from the center of the expected storm, especially on the east side.

Reports: Former star Vince Carter to become first Raptor to have number retired

Published

 on

TORONTO – Former Toronto Raptors star Vince Carter will have his No. 15 retired by the NBA team this season, according to multiple media reports.

The 47-year-old Hall of Famer is expected to have his jersey retired in Toronto on Nov. 2 and will become the first Raptor to receive the honour.

Carter was the Raptors’ first superstar and is credited for raising the profile of the team and igniting enthusiasm for basketball across Canada.

But the decision to retire his jersey is polarizing, with some fans and local media members still smarting from his acrimonious departure from the team in December 2004.

Carter was traded to the New Jersey (now Brooklyn) Nets for a meagre return early in the 2004-05 season amid claims that he “quit” on the team.

Carter averaged 23.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.3 steals over 403 games with the Raptors.

During his time in Toronto, the athletic Carter was perhaps best known for his highlight-reel dunking ability. He won the NBA’s slam dunk contest in 2000 with a memorable performance, clinching the title with a 360-degree windmill jam.

He was an eight-time NBA all-star (2000-07), but even when his explosiveness left him, he managed to find a niche as a veteran role player. Carter played 22 seasons, retiring after the 2019-20 season while with the Atlanta Hawks, and is the only NBA player to suit up for action in four different decades.

Carter made his debut with the Raptors in 1998 after being traded to Toronto at that year’s draft after being selected fifth overall by Golden State.

He also played with Dallas, Memphis, Orlando, Sacramento and Phoenix. Carter finished with averages of 16.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3,1 assists and one steal over 1,541 regular-season NBA games.

Carter will enter the Basketball Hall of Fame next month and will have his number retired by the Nets in January.

Retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre says he has Parkinson’s disease

Published

 on

WASHINGTON (AP) — Retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, he told a congressional committee Tuesday.

Favre made the disclosure as part of his testimony about a welfare misspending scandal in Mississippi. Favre, who does not face criminal charges, has repaid just over $1 million in speaking fees funded by a welfare program in the state and was also an investor in a biotech company with ties to the case. The biotech firm has said it was developing concussion treatments.

The former football star told the committee that he lost his investment in the company “that I believed was developing a breakthrough concussion drug I thought would help others.”

“As I’m sure you’ll understand, while it’s too late for me — I’ve recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s — this is also a cause dear to my heart,” Favre said.

What causes Parkinson’s disease is unknown, and it is unclear if Favre’s disease is connected to his football career or head injuries. He said in 2022 that he estimates he experienced “thousands” of concussions in his two decades in the NFL.

Favre appeared at the Republican-led House Ways and Means Committee hearing to advocate reform of the federal welfare system to better prevent fraud.

“The challenges my family and I have faced over the last three years—because certain government officials in Mississippi failed to protect federal TANF funds from fraud and abuse, and are unjustifiably trying to blame me, those challenges have hurt my good name and are worse than anything I faced in football,” Favre said.

House Republicans have said a Mississippi welfare misspending scandal involving Favre and others points to the need for an overhaul in the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.

Favre has said he didn’t know the payments he received came from welfare funds and has noted his charity had provided millions of dollars to poor kids in his home state of Mississippi and in Wisconsin, where he played most of his career with the Green Bay Packers.
