Virgin Media data breach affects 900,000 people – BBC News

A Virgin Media database containing the personal details of 900,000 people was left unsecured and accessible online for 10 months, the company has admitted.

The information was accessed “on at least one occasion” by an unknown user.

The database, which was for marketing purposes, contained phone numbers, home and email addresses.

It did not include passwords or financial details.

The breach was not due to a hack or a criminal attack, but because the database had been “incorrectly configured” by a member of staff not following the correct procedures, Virgin Media said.

The firm was alerted to the problem on Friday after it was spotted by an independent security researcher.

The company said almost all of those affected were Virgin customers with television or fixed-line telephone accounts, although the database also included some Virgin Mobile customers as well as potential customers referred by friends as part of a promotion.

Virgin Media, which is owned by US cable group, Liberty Global, has informed the Information Commissioner’s Office as required, and launched a forensic investigation.

Lutz Schüler, chief executive of Virgin Media said: “We recently became aware that one of our marketing databases was incorrectly configured which allowed unauthorised access. We immediately solved the issue by shutting down access.”

“Protecting our customers’ data is a top priority and we sincerely apologise,” he said.

“Based upon our investigation, Virgin Media does believe that the database was accessed on at least one occasion but we do not know the extent of the access or if any information was actually used,” Mr Schuler said.

Virgin Media said it would be emailing those affected on Thursday, in order to warn them about the risks of phishing, nuisance calls and identity theft. The message will include a reminder not to click on unknown links in emails and not to provide personal details to unverified callers.

Further advice was available on its website, it said.

The fact that Virgin Media’s database hasn’t been actively hacked is reassuring for customers, but while the details are light, it sounds like human error is to blame and that is rather embarrassing for a tech firm.

Ten months is a long time for all that data to have just been sitting there, waiting to be found.

And while no passwords or bank details were among it, there’s an awful lot of contact information for a cyber-criminal to work with. Phishing expeditions – when someone tries to get financial information out of a victim by pretending to be a company with a legitimate reason for contact – are not particularly sophisticated, but they are effective for those caught off-guard, and can be a lucrative source of income.

It’s unclear whether this was yet another case of unsecured data being stored on a cloud service that’s easily searchable if you know how. There have been dozens of examples of this lately, including just this week a database of the personal details of people using train station wi-fi around the UK.

Virgin Media has apologised and really, there’s very little practical advice to offer in the light of this kind of breach, beyond the usual protocol of staying alert to any messages requesting personal information or access to any kind of finance.

Male arrested in large drugs, weapons investigation

A North York male has been arrested in connection with the largest fentanyl seizure in the history of the Guelph Police Service.

A seven-month investigation which began in early 2021 resulted in the seizure of more than 100,000 doses of fentanyl and four firearms. Several individuals were arrested last fall and others identified as persons of interest as the investigation continued.

On Tuesday, Guelph Police were notified by another police service that one of the males identified during that investigation had been arrested in the Greater Toronto Area and charged with drug offences. The male was transported to Guelph.

A 26-year-old North York male is charged in Guelph with three counts of trafficking in a controlled substance. He will appear in a Guelph bail court Thursday.

Two vehicles stolen Wednesday

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after two motor vehicles were stolen on the same day.

Approximately 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, a male called police to report his 2013 Ford Fusion had been stolen overnight from his driveway in the area of Gordon Street and Hands Drive.  Another resident of the same street called police to report seeing a suspicious male checking car doors in the neighbourhood approximately 3 a.m. before getting into the passenger side of a vehicle which left at a high rate of speed.

Female arrested, held for bail

A Kitchener female who twice missed court dates in Guelph was held in custody to ensure she makes it the next time.

The female was scheduled to appear in April for theft under $5,000 and two counts of failing to appear. A warrant was taken out for her arrest after she failed to show up.

Early Thursday she was arrested by another police service and returned to Guelph. A 37-year-old Kitchener female faces an additional charge of failing to appear and was held to appear in a Guelph bail court Thursday.

Female Eye Film Festival Celebrates 20 Years June 9-12, 2002

 Toronto, ON  Returning LIVE, the Female Eye Film Festival (FeFF), founded by Canadian trailblazer Leslie Ann Coles, celebrates its 20th Anniversary June 9 to 12, 2022, at TIFF Bell Lightbox.

FeFF was way ahead of its time at its founding, and the festival’s tagline, “Always Honest, Not Always Pretty,” says it all. It’s an eclectic program of features, documentaries, shorts, and the highly anticipated Late-Night Thrills and Chills – an international program of horror, suspense, and thrillers directed by women – on Friday, June 10, and Saturday, June 11, at 10PM. 

Voted one of the “Top 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee” by Movie Maker Magazine for a 10th consecutive year (2013–2022), FeFF is a competitive international women’s film festival that provides an exclusive showcase for Canadian and foreign women and gender-diverse directors.

 

FeFF has tackled gender equality and inclusion since its inception. The Indigenous Filmmaker Series launched in 2008 with Indigenous Canadian filmmaker Jules Koostachin at the helm. In 2009, FeFF produced the inaugural Young Filmmaker Development Workshop, a mentorship for debut female filmmakers. To date, FeFF has produced 46 short debut films, 26 by Indigenous filmmakers, and all had their premieres at Female Eye. FeFF continues to provide a dedicated showcase for local directors with the Toronto Filmmaker Series, which held its inaugural event in 2001. The Script Development Program, open to both men and women, celebrates its 15th edition in 2022.

This year they are opening the festival with my fourth feature film as writer/director: ‘Carmen.’ It is communities like FeFF and the WIDC [Women In the Director’s Chair] that have propelled me forward to reveal my true voice in cinema. Other notable Canadian features, supported by Telefilm Canada, include “We’re All in This Together,” a clever adaptation of the novel by Amy Jones written by, directed by, and starring Katie Boland in her debut directorial feature film; “The Kissing Game,” a passionate urban fantasy and solo performance that explores love, betrayal, friendship, and identity directed by newcomer Montreal filmmaker Véa; “Be Still,” by Elizabeth Lazebnik, an homage to Canadian photographer Hannah Maynard, who was 40 years ahead of the Surrealist movement. FeFF also celebrates Toronto media artist Edie Steiner with a film retrospective and artist talk.

This year’s INDUSTRY INITIATIVES, supported by Ontario Creates and ACTRA Fraternal Benefits (AFBS), feature industry panel discussions, script readings, the 10th Annual Live Pitch, the Directors’ Roundtable, and a panel dedicated to women in virtual production who hold positions of creative control in this quickly evolving pipeline. This panel will showcase excerpts from their work and explore the topics of democratized storytelling, female authorship, and creative empowerment. The filmmakers will use process videos to demonstrate aspects of the VP workflow as it pertains to pre-visualization, production, and creative collaboration.
