243 candidates meet registration deadline for Saskatchewan’s Oct. 28 election

Published

 on

Elections Saskatchewan says a total of 243 candidates across 61 constituencies filed their nomination papers with the agency’s returning office in their constituencies in time for Saturday’s registration deadline.

According to Elections Saskatchewan, that’s up from 236 candidates in the 2020 provincial election, but less than the record 268 candidates in the 2016 vote.

Chief Electoral Officer Michael Boda said in a news release after the deadline passed that roughly one million ballots would be printed over the Thanksgiving weekend, and then delivered to the 61 constituency returning offices before Voting Week begins October 22.

Election Day is Monday, Oct. 28.

Neither Saskatchewan Party Leader Scott Moe nor NDP Leader Carla Beck appeared at scheduled campaign events over the past few days, but they will square off in a televised debate on Wednesday.

The NDP says Beck will have an availability outside a northwest Regina home today.

Ontario to make cities ask province for permission to install bike lanes

Published

 on

TORONTO – Ontario is planning to make cities ask the province for permission if they want to install bike lanes that would remove lanes of vehicle traffic.

Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria says too many drivers are stuck in gridlock as a result of bike lanes that were installed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The requirement for municipalities to receive provincial approval and demonstrate that proposed bike lanes won’t negatively affect vehicle traffic will be contained in the first bill the Progressive Conservative government tables when the legislature resumes sitting next week.

Premier Doug Ford, who lives in the west end of Toronto, has complained about bike lanes that were installed on Bloor Street West, saying the street is jammed and first responders are having a hard time getting through the congestion.

Sarkaria says the province is not ordering the removal of those bike lanes at the moment, but is asking for more data and pausing the installation of any new, similar bike lanes.

Sarkaria also says the province is moving ahead with a plan to increase the speed limit to 110 kilometres per hour on all 400-series highways, where it is safe to do so.

IQALUIT, Nunavut – An Air India flight made an emergency landing this morning in Nunavut following a security threat posted online.

RCMP say Air India Flight 127 was en route from New Delhi to Chicago, but landed instead at the Iqaluit International Airport at 5:21 a.m.

The police force says in a news release all 211 passengers and crew were relocated to the airport.

Air India says it and other airlines have been subject to “a number of threats” in recent days, adding that all of them have later been found to be hoaxes.

The airline says the emergency landing was a precautionary measure and the aircraft and passengers are being re-screened.

Indian media reported Monday that another Air India flight from Mumbai to New York was rerouted to Delhi following a bomb threat online.
