Air India flight makes emergency landing in Iqaluit after online threat

IQALUIT, Nunavut – An Air India flight made an emergency landing this morning in Nunavut following a security threat posted online.

RCMP say Air India Flight 127 was en route from New Delhi to Chicago, but landed instead at the Iqaluit International Airport at 5:21 a.m.

The police force says in a news release all 211 passengers and crew were relocated to the airport.

Air India says it and other airlines have been subject to “a number of threats” in recent days, adding that all of them have later been found to be hoaxes.

The airline says the emergency landing was a precautionary measure and the aircraft and passengers are being re-screened.

Indian media reported Monday that another Air India flight from Mumbai to New York was rerouted to Delhi following a bomb threat online.

TORONTO – Ontario is investing $146 million into the life sciences sector as it tries to become a world leader in biomanufacturing and health sciences.

Premier Doug Ford has announced the second phase of the province’s life sciences strategy, which will see the province put $46 million into an infrastructure fund to boost research capacity at post-secondary schools and hospitals.

The province is also spending $5 million to speed up clinical trials, $36 million for several startup funds and $40 million in venture capital funds intended to spur growth and innovation.

The province is also expected to soon announce the details of a program to help companies find laboratory space.

Ford says the province has attracted $5 billion in life sciences investments since his government came to power in 2018.

Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli says the province aims to increase the number of jobs in the sector to 85,000 from 72,000 by 2030.

OTTAWA – Statistics Canada says wholesale sales, excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain, fell 0.6 per cent to $81.9 billion in August.

The agency says sales fell in five of the seven subsectors with the motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts and accessories subsector down 1.8 per cent at $14 billion.

Meanwhile, the miscellaneous subsector dropped 3.9 per cent to $10.1 billion as six of its seven industry groups fell, with the agriculture supplies industry group down 5.6 per cent.

The personal and household goods subsector rose 2.3 per cent to $12.5 billion, boosted by the pharmaceuticals and pharmacy supplies industry.

In volume terms, wholesale sales, excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain, fell 0.7 per cent in August.

Statistics Canada started including oilseed and grain as well as the petroleum and petroleum products subsector as part of wholesale trade last year, but is excluding the data from its monthly analysis until there is enough historical data.
