Bus tours for Jasper residents whose properties were affected by fire to start Sunday

Published

 on

EDMONTON – Bus tours for evacuees from Jasper, Alta., to allow those whose homes were damaged or destroyed by a wildfire to see the damage first-hand will begin on Sunday.

Joe Zatylny with the Alberta Emergency Management Agency told an online news conference that the first tours will depart from Edmonton as well as Edson, Alta.

Zatylny cautions the tours are contingent on the wildfire situation in Jasper National Park remaining safe.

Thousands of people fled the town and park last week due to the fire, which eventually spread into the community and destroyed one-third of its buildings.

Registration for residents to take part in the tours was announced Friday, but a time for when they’d happen was still up in the air.

Zatylny says people who have registered will be contacted, and registration remains open.

Mental health, as well as support referral services, will be available during the tour to help people prepare for viewing the disaster site.

Zatylny says for safety, no one will be allowed to leave the buses while they are inside the national park.

He says planning continues for all evacuees to eventually return home.

Canada’s Nicholas Bennett captures second Paralympic swim gold, Maxwell earns silver

Published

 on

PARIS – The work that produced Nicholas Bennett’s first gold medal of the Paralympic Games was the key to his second.

The Canadian surged into the lead on the breaststroke leg of his 200-metre individual medley en route to victory Wednesday, and two days after his gold in the 100-metre breaststroke.

The 20-year-old from Parksville, B.C., is the first Canadian man to win multiple Paralympic gold medals in a single meet since Benoit Huot’s five in Athens, Greece, in 2004.

Bennett touched the wall in a Paralympic record time of two minutes 6.05 seconds, which was two and a half seconds faster than silver medallist Rhys Darby of Britain.

“Being seven hundredths of a second off my world record, it’s a success I’ll say the least,” Bennett said.

He captured his third medal in Paris after taking silver in 200 freestyle.

His roommate in the athletes’ village captured a silver medal within minutes of Bennett’s triumph. Reid Maxwell of St. Albert, Alta., duelled with Alberto Amodeo in the 400-metre freestyle and touched the wall six-tenths of a second back of the Italian.

“I’ve always kind of dreamed to just come here. Being able to medal is a whole other thing,” Maxwell said. “That fight for the last 50 (metres), that made it worth it.”

The 17-year-old is the youngest Canadian swimmer to win a Paralympic medal since Aurelie Rivard’s silver in 2012 when she was 16.

“It’s great to see another man to hit the podium and especially one so young,” Bennett said.

Two Canadian men on the swim podium on the same night was the first time since 2008 when Huot and Donovan Tildesley were bronze medallists in Beijing.

Bennett was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at the age of three. He competes in the S14 classification for athletes with intellectual impairment.

He’s coached by his sister Haley Bennett-Osborne. The siblings worked ceaselessly on his breaststroke over the last year.

As the reigning world champion and world-record holder, Bennett felt more confident for his medley final than he did for breaststroke.

He was third after butterfly and second after the backstroke legs, before taking over in breaststroke and putting the win away in freestyle.

“I was certainly a lot more comfortable racing tonight,” Bennett said. “I knew there definitely was a chance to get close to my record, so it definitely reassuring.

“I didn’t know if I was going to even medal in the breaststroke. Having a sense of certainty definitely calms the emotions, so I’m not bawling my eyes out right now.”

But the tears he shed atop the podium during O Canada the first time returned for the second.

“It’s an honour to be able to be wrapped around the flag and parade around with it,” Bennett said.

Maxwell watched the end of his roommate’s race from the ready room. He walked onto the La Defense Arena pool deck with Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” playing in his headphones “which is definitely a good pre-race song,” he said.

Racing fast in the morning heats with a little something in the tank left had the Paralympic rookie feeling bullish about the final.

“This morning felt super-strong,” the teenager said. “I hit the wall and I could still catch my breath, so it definitely wasn’t everything. This morning was long and strong and felt smooth and was a massive best time.”

Maxwell, who was born missing his lower right leg and with abdominal muscle impairment, races the S8 classification. He had a quiet schedule over the six days of swimming with a pair of relay races.

He’s now into the meat of his meet with relays Thursday and 100-metre butterfly and 100-metre freestyle before competition in the pool wraps Saturday.

Bennett likes taking photos on his travels and playing real-time strategy games online with his friends when he isn’t in the pool. He’s tempering his expectations for his last race in Friday’s 100-metre backstroke.

“We’ll see how that one goes. I find my backstroke is my weakest strong,” he said. “The goal is to see what I can do on this stage, especially on Day 9. It’s more of a gauge event than expecting to hit the podium.”

With eight medals — two gold, four silver and two bronze — Canada’s Paralympic swim team has equalled its total medal output in Tokyo three years ago, where it produced three gold, three silver and two bronze.

Canadian Nathan Rourke to make fourth straight start for B.C. Lions

Published

 on

Vernon Adam Jr. is back practising with the B.C. Lions but Canadian Nathan Rourke will remain the club’s starting quarterback.

Rourke will make a fourth straight start Friday night when B.C. (6-6) visits the Montreal Alouettes (10-1). Head coach Rick Campbell said this week he hopes Adams could dress for the game and possibly be ready to play, if needed.

Adams suffered a knee injury in B.C.’s 25-0 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Aug. 1. He started the Lions’ first eight games, leading the team to a 5-3 record.

B.C. re-signed Rourke last month after he was released by the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons. Rourke was the CFL’s outstanding Canadian in 2022 while with the Lions.

Adams practised with B.C.’s second-team offence this week.

Rourke completed 21-of-30 passes for 325 yards with three TDs and an interception in B.C.’s 38-12 win over the Ottawa Redblacks in Victoria on Saturday. He also ran three times for 29 yards and a touchdown as the Lions snapped a five-game losing streak.

Overall, Rourke, has completed 51-of-86 passes (59.3 per cent) for 695 yards with three TDs and four interceptions since his return. He has also rushed 11 times for 119 yards (10.7-yard average) and a touchdown.

Rourke and Co. face a tough challenge versus Montreal. The defending Grey Cup champions will not only be rested coming off a bye week but are also riding a five-game win streak.

Montreal is also 6-0 versus the West Division and 5-1 at home. B.C. is 2-2 against East Division teams but 2-5 on the road.

Montreal’s defence is ranked first overall in fewest offensive points allowed (18.7 per game), passing touchdowns (11) and offensive TDs (18) and second in offensive yards (339.6 per game) and passing yards (249.1).

Montreal is also second in offensive points scored (27.3 per game) and offensive TDs (32). The Alouettes also rarely beat themselves as they’re first in the CFL in fewest turnovers made (15), penalties (66) and yards penalized (608).

Montreal has already clinched an East Division playoff spot. B.C. remains in the thick of the race for first in the West Division, entering action tied atop the standings with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who’ve won four straight.

Pick: Montreal.

Toronto Argonauts versus Ottawa Redblacks (Saturday afternoon)

At Ottawa, the Redblacks (7-3-1) look to remain unbeaten at TD Place (5-0-1) and move five points ahead of third-place Toronto (6-5) in the East Division. The home team will play six of its remaining seven regular-season games versus Eastern clubs, including the Argos twice. Chad Kelly has posted consecutive 300-yard passing performances in his first two starts with the Double Blue but the visitors are 1-4 on the road and 1-3 within the conference.

Pick: Ottawa.

Saskatchewan Roughriders versus Winnipeg Blue Bombers (Saturday afternoon)

At Winnipeg, the Bombers (6-6) look to the sweep the home-and-home series. Zach Collaros is expected to start after being knocked out of last week’s 35-33 win following a hit from defensive tackle Miles Brown, who received a roughing-the-passer penalty. Trevor Harris threw for 368 yards and three TDs last week in a losing cause as Saskatchewan (5-6-1) has now lost three straight and is riding a six-game winless streak (0-5-1).

Pick: Winnipeg.

Calgary Stampeders versus Edmonton Elks (Saturday night)

At Edmonton, the Elks (4-8) can sweep this series following Monday’s 35-20 win. McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw for a career-best 486 yards and three TDs, two going to Tevin Jones, who had five catches for 208 yards. Jake Maier had 297 passing yards and a TD for Calgary (4-7) but was also intercepted four times. He’s expected to start this contest ahead of Logan Bonner, who was four-of-six passing for 33 yards in limited action last week. The Stamps have lost three straight and are 0-5 away from McMahon Stadium.

Pick: Edmonton.

Last week: 2-2.

CP’s overall record: 29-23.
