Four local companies will square off in the ultimate backyard build-off at the 2024 Calgary Home and Garden Show, running Feb. 22 to Feb. 25 at the BMO Centre, Stampede Park. HC Forest Products presents Backyard Wars, a show feature where attendees are invited to vote for their favourite backyard display while digging up a few ideas for their own.
This year’s contestants are Calgary Lawn Solutions, Project Landscape, Premier Portable Buildings and Backyard Canada. Each will recreate a small-scale backyard, trying to out-design and out-build their fellow contestants. Project Landscape was on the backyard battleground in 2023 and will up their game in 2024 says office manager, Alison Atherton.

“This year we’re focusing on our partners, Belgard. Our whole booth will be done in two different styles of Belgard brick. We’re doing a patio with two different styles of brick and building a benched-in firepit area,” she says.
Project Landscape, one of Calgary’s largest residential landscape companies, will also add a pergola for height. To up the ante, there will be a draw for a $50,000 backyard makeover. Ballots will be available at the Backyard Wars feature or online at the company’s website.
The company specializes in landscape projects like patios, retaining walls, decking, landscape lighting and water features.
A relatively new challenger, Backyard Canada, may prove to be stiff competition. Founded in 2020 at a time when COVID-19 was sending everyone outside for fresh air, the company sells products to help homeowners activate their backyard throughout all four seasons. That includes game equipment like outdoor ping pong tables, kitchens, hot tubs, saunas and cold plunges.
“Our goal is to get you thinking about some of the products you can put into your backyard rather than just the landscaping aspect,” says James Sharp, managing partner.

Backyard Canada’s display will feature an outdoor sauna and cold plunge, both used in combination as a hot/cold bath therapy called a nordic cycle. Alternating between extreme temperatures is said to stimulate your circulation, relieve sore muscles and joints and improve blood flow to the skin.
“Saunas have been a huge growth area for us, and now cold plunges seem to be the new thing. Another new product is snow melting mats so you can create a perfect pathway to your hot tubs or sauna,” Sharp says.
Each of the four exhibitors will battle it out for their choice of a $1,000 cash prize or free booth space at the 2025 Home and Garden Show. Details on how to vote are posted at the HC Forest Products Backyard Wars feature at the show.

CHICAGO (AP) — United Airlines has struck a deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to offer satellite-based Starlink WiFi service on flights within the next several years.
The airline said Friday the service will be free to passengers.
United said it will begin testing the service early next year and begin offering it on some flights by later in 2025.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
The announcement comes as airlines rush to offer more amenities as a way to stand out when passengers pick a carrier for a trip. United’s goal is to make sitting on a plane pretty much like being on the ground when it comes to browsing the internet, streaming entertainment and playing games.
“Everything you can do on the ground, you’ll soon be able to do on board a United plane at 35,000 feet, just about anywhere in the world,” CEO Scott Kirby said in announcing the deal.
The airline says Starlink will allow passengers to get internet access even over oceans and polar regions where traditional cell or Wi-Fi signals may be weak or missing.
