Canada wildfires: Trudeau criticises Facebook over news ban amid crisis

Published

 on

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has accused Facebook of putting “profits ahead of people’s safety” after it blocked news amid devastating wildfires in the country.

Facebook banned news on its platform in response to Canadian law forcing it to share profit with news outlets.

Wildfire evacuees have said the ban has impacted their ability to share critical news with each other.

Meta, Facebook’s parent company, calls the law “fundamentally flawed”.

The prime minister, during a televised news conference on Monday, said the actions of Meta were “inconceivable”.

The company has blocked news on Facebook and Instagram in Canada since 1 August, after the country’s parliament passed an online news bill that requires platforms like Google and Meta to negotiate deals with news publishers for content.

Meta has faced significant criticism from Canadian officials since then. On Saturday, Canada’s heritage minister, Pascale St-Onge, said in a post on social media that the company is blocking “essential information” for users.

She added that this is being done despite the law – dubbed Bill C-18 or the Online News Act- not going into effect yet. In an earlier post, she called Meta’s decision “reckless”.

Meta has called the law “fundamentally flawed legislation that ignores the realities of how our platforms work”.

In a statement to the BBC, Meta said the law forces the company “to end access to news content in order to comply with the legislation”.

It added that it has activated a “Safety Check” feature on its platform for people living in evacuated areas.

This allows users to mark themselves safe and access “reputable information, including content from official government agencies”, a spokesperson said.

Evacuees in the Northwest Territories, where a wildfire continues to rage 15 kilometres (9 miles) away from its largest city Yellowknife, said the news ban has made it harder for them to spread life-saving information with their network.

Delaney Poitras, who has had to evacuate twice in recent weeks from her home in Fort Smith, told the CBC that she has not been able to share things like news conferences from officials or news articles on evacuation updates.

She adds that Facebook plays a huge role in connecting people in her community. “It’s how we all keep in touch,” she said.

Data suggests that about 77% of Canadians use Facebook, and one in four of those users rely on it for news.

Canada’s Diallo advances to U.S. Open main draw with win over France’s Royer

Published

 on

NEW YORK – Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo has qualified for his second career Grand Slam main draw after posting a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win over France’s Valentin Royer in U.S. Open qualifying Thursday.

Diallo struggled to make the most of his opportunities, converting just two of his 11 break point chances. But both those breaks came with him trailing 4-3 in the second set.

Royer converted the only break point chance he had to go up in the second set but couldn’t hold on.

Diallo qualified for his first Grand Slam main draw earlier this year at the French Open, where he lost his first-round match in five sets to Japanese veteran Kei Nishikori.

Diallo joins Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., in the men’s main draw.

Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., the 2019 champion, and Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., the 2021 runner-up, are in the women’s draw.

Jets send rights to McGroarty to Penguins for Yager in prospect swap

Published

 on

WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Jets and Pittsburgh Penguins swapped forward prospects Thursday, with the Jets landing Brayden Yager for the rights to Rutger McGroarty.

Yager was Pittsburgh’s first-round pick (14th overall) at the 2023 NHL draft.

The 19-year-old from Saskatoon had 35 goals and 60 assists in 57 regular-season games and 27 points (11G, 16A) in 20 playoff contests to help the Moose Jaw Warriors win the Western Hockey League title last season.

He added six points in four games at the 2024 Memorial Cup and he was named to the tournament all-star team.

The Jets selected McGroarty 14th overall in the 2022 draft. The 20-year-old from Lincoln, Neb., had 52 points (16 goals, 36 assists) in 36 games with the University of Michigan in 2023-24.

Both players competed at the 2024 world junior hockey championship in Gothenburg, Sweden. McGroarty was the captain of the United States and had five goals and four assists in leading his country to gold. Yager had two goals and three assists as Canada finished fifth.

Seattle Mariners fire manager Scott Servais in midst of midseason collapse, according to report

Published

 on

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners reportedly fired manager Scott Servais on Thursday with the team in the midst a two-month long collapse having blown a 10-game lead in the division and tumbling to the fringes of playoff contention in the American League.

The Athletic reported the decision by the Mariners, citing unnamed sources. The report said former catcher Dan Wilson would be taking over.

The decision to move on from Servais during his ninth season in charge came on the heels of a disastrous 1-8 road trip that dropped the Mariners back to 64-64 after sitting 13 games over .500 at one point in mid-June.

The Mariners trail Houston by five games in the AL West and are 7 1/2 back in the wild-card standings. But nothing in the way Seattle has played since leading the division by 10 games on June 18 has provided optimism there will be a turnaround over the final five weeks of the regular season.

Servais arrived in Seattle before the 2016 season, brought on in lockstep with executive vice president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto. Servais was 680-642 during his time with Seattle, going through a significant rebuild midway through his tenure that ultimately made the Mariners competitive but not good enough.
