The number of COVID-19 cases worldwide had reached 22.81 million and death toll exceeded 795,000 as of 14:09 Central European Summer Time (CEST) on Saturday, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Globally, a total of 22,814,491 confirmed cases of COVID-19 had been reported to the WHO with the death toll of 795,132.
According to the WHO, there were 275,499 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 globally in 24 hours, and 5,926 new deaths. The WHO said the Americas are still the hardest-hit region by the novel coronavirus, with a daily increase of 135,756 confirmed cases and 4,684 deaths, bringing the two figures to 12,164,684 and 434,731, respectively.
The total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed 5.66 million on Saturday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University. The national case count rose to 5,665,483, with the death toll in the country reaching 176,332 as of 20:27 Eastern Standard Time, according to the CSSE.
A total of 4,921 new COVID-19 confirmed cases were reported in Russia within 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 951,897. Another 121 new deaths were also reported, bringing the total death toll to 16,310.
The number of new confirmed cases was 3,602 in France on Saturday, a slight drop after the country reported more than 4,000 daily new cases for consecutive two days. Nine new deaths have been reported.
Other European countries also continued to see an increase in new confirmed cases. Germany reported 2,034 new confirmed cases in 24 hours, the highest number of new cases in a single day since April 25, the German CDC said Saturday. The UK Department of Health reported 1,288 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, with more than 1,000 new cases and 18 new deaths on a single day.
Italy reported 1,071 new confirmed cases on Saturday, the first time the country has seen more than 1,000 new confirmed cases in a single day since it significantly relaxed epidemic control measures in mid-May. Three new deaths were also reported.
The epidemic situation in Poland continued to worsen since the beginning of August as the country reported 900 new cases on Saturday, the second highest number of new cases in a single day, following 903 new confirmed cases reported on Friday.
In order to curb the epidemic, the Polish government has planned to extend the ban on international passenger flights to September 8 and expand the ban list to 63 countries and regions.
The confirmed COVID-19 cases in Japan increased by 984 to reach 62,046 as of Saturday night, according to the latest figures from the country’s Health Ministry and local authorities.
The figure excluded the 712 cases from the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined in Yokohama near Tokyo.
South Korea reported 332 more COVID-19 cases as of 00:00 on Saturday local time than the case figure 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 17,002.
The daily caseload soared in triple digits for nine straight days, topping 300 for two days in a row. It was the highest in more than five months since March 8.
Argentina’s Ministry of Health announced Saturday that the country had 7,759 new confirmed COVID-19 cases within 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 336,802. A total of 118 new deaths were also reported the same day, bringing the total number of deaths to 6,848.
