A group of WeChat users in the United States sued the Trump administration on Friday, aiming to block its ban on popular Chinese messaging app WeChat in the country.
The U.S. WeChat Users Alliance filed a complaint in the San Francisco federal court. The coalition of Chinese-American lawyers say Trump’s planned restriction on the app is unconstitutional. They claim that it violates rights to free speech and due process.
Claiming the app puts threats to the national security of the United States, Trump signed an executive order on Aug 6, banning U.S. transactions with Chinese tech giant Tencent, the owner of WeChat, starting in 45 days. A similar executive order has also been issued for TikTok, a short-video social media app owned by Chinese tech firm ByteDance.
