Canada News Media is an independent digital news organization based in Edmonton, Alberta. Since 2019 we have reported on the stories that shape life in this country, with particular attention to communities whose voices are too often left out of national coverage, including Black Canadians, Indigenous peoples, and other underrepresented groups. This page explains how we work, the standards we hold ourselves to, and how readers can hold us accountable.
Our mission and values
We exist to deliver accurate, fair, and useful journalism to Canadian readers. We believe a healthy democracy depends on a public that is well informed, and that the press has a duty to report honestly even when the truth is inconvenient. Our coverage is guided by three commitments: accuracy above speed, fairness toward every person and group we write about, and a steady focus on the public interest.
Editorial independence
Our newsroom makes its own decisions about what to cover and how to cover it. No advertiser, sponsor, business partner, or outside party directs our reporting or influences the conclusions of a story. When a commercial relationship touches on a subject we are reporting, we disclose it plainly so readers can judge for themselves. Editorial staff, not the business side of the organization, decide what is published.
Accuracy and verification
We verify information before we publish it. Reporters confirm facts with primary sources wherever possible, including official records, named experts, and people with direct knowledge of events. We do not publish rumour as fact. When we report a claim that we cannot independently confirm, we say so clearly and attribute it to its source. If a story relies on data or statistics, we cite where the numbers come from, favouring named Canadian sources such as Statistics Canada, the Bank of Canada, and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
Sourcing and attribution
We name our sources whenever we can, because named sources allow readers to weigh credibility. We grant anonymity only when a source faces a real risk of harm, legal jeopardy, or loss of livelihood, and only when the information they provide is important and cannot be obtained another way. When we use an anonymous source, a senior editor knows the source’s identity and approves its use. We never allow anonymous sources to make personal attacks.
Fairness and the right of reply
When our reporting raises questions about a person or organization, we make a genuine effort to reach them for comment before publication, and we represent their response fairly. People and institutions we write about have a right to respond to claims made against them, and we give them reasonable opportunity to do so.
Diversity and representation
Our commitment to underrepresented communities shapes both what we cover and how we cover it. We seek out a range of voices, we are careful with language that describes identity, and we work to avoid stereotypes and assumptions. We treat the communities we report on as audiences we serve, not subjects we observe from a distance.
Separation of news and commercial content
We clearly distinguish independent journalism from any sponsored, paid, or partner content. Material that is paid for or supplied by a third party is labelled as such, and any commercial outbound links carry the appropriate disclosure. Advertising never determines our editorial coverage.
Use of artificial intelligence
We use technology, including automated tools, to help our team gather information, draft, and edit. Every piece of journalism we publish is reviewed by a human editor who is responsible for its accuracy and fairness. We do not publish machine generated content without human oversight, and the editorial judgment behind every story rests with our staff, not with software.
Corrections and accountability
We make mistakes, and when we do we correct them openly and promptly. Our approach to corrections is described in detail on our Corrections Policy page. Readers who believe we have published an error are encouraged to contact us so we can review it.
Ownership and funding
Canada News Media operates under Jonsmarts Holding Inc. We are transparent about our ownership, and our editorial decisions remain independent of our commercial interests. Questions about our structure or funding can be directed to our editorial team through our contact page.
