Published

 on

Buying juice all the time can get expensive. And usually, they’re full of sugar, artificial preservatives, and all kinds of other things you might not want to be drinking regularly. Plus, there are only so many flavours out there, and you might not be finding your favourites very often. Have you ever thought of making juice from scratch instead?

Juicers are amazing tools that let you make juice from the comfort of your very own kitchen. You can use any combination of ingredients that you want, and it takes no time at all. They’re really easy to use, and for the most part, easy to tuck away in a cupboard too. What’s not to love, right?

Does a juicer sound like a good fit for your kitchen? We’d love to help you find the right one. And to do that, you’ll need to think about things like the price, chute size, power, speeds, dishwasher-safe parts, and more. Every single feature matters, after all!

This comprehensive guide will investigate the best juicers in Canada right now and outline the criteria you should consider while making your purchase decision. Let’s dive right into our top five products.

The Best Juicers Right Now

Our Top Pick for The Best Juicer

Breville Juice Fountain Plus Juicer Review

What We Think of the Breville Juice Fountain Plus Juicer

The Breville Juice Fountain Plus Juicer is so well-rounded it’s not even funny. Although it’s a centrifugal juicer, it does a good job of preserving a lot of the nutrition in your ingredients and minimizing the amount of juice lost in the pulp. This is the main reason why it’s our favourite, but not the only one. We also love how easy it is to clean—a quick scrub by hand will do the job, or you can throw everything in your dishwasher.

The benefits don’t end there though—the large chute minimizes your prep time, the included pulp and juice containers are well-suited to juicing in large batches, the froth separator keeps your juice pure, the onboard cord storage eliminates hassle…we could go on. It even has a safety arm to stop the juicer from turning on until the cover is in place securely. We love that.

We’re so happy to tell you that we hardly have any bad things to say about this juicer. The price is a bit higher than we’d like, but it’s certainly reasonable considering the quality you’re getting in return. This machine is also pretty bulky, so unless you have a ton of cupboard space available, it will likely end up living on your countertop. Not a huge deal, right?

What Reviewers Are Saying About the Breville Juice Fountain Plus Juicer

Reviewers have a very high opinion of the Breville Juice Fountain Plus Juicer. It’s incredibly easy to clean, and its sleek design means it can live on the counter without ruining the kitchen’s aesthetic. The onboard cord storage is a nice touch, and people love how well it creates a pulp and froth-free drink. It holds up well to heavy workloads, too.

  • Included 1.1 qt juice jug has a froth separator

  • Bulky

  • Little bit pricey

Our Final Thoughts on the Breville Juice Fountain Plus Juicer

  • Performance: 5/5

  • Usability: 5/5

  • Price: 3/5

  • Quality: 5/5

All in all, the Breville Juice Fountain Plus Juicer is our top overall pick for juicers this year, for obvious reasons. No matter what your ideal features are or what kind of juice you’ll be making the most, this option will be a perfect match. It’s nearly flawless.

Our Upgrade Pick

Omega VSJ843QS Vertical Slow Masticating Juicer Review

What We Think of the Omega VSJ843QS Vertical Slow Masticating Juicer

Oh boy are we fans of the Omega VSJ843QS Vertical Slow Masticating Juicer. The masticating auger moves at only 43 RPM, which is pretty much as slow as it gets. That means you’ll get the maximum amount of nutrition out of your fruits and veggies. It also has a reverse function to help clear clogs before they become a bigger problem. Not that you’ll need to use it very often.

Another feature we enjoy is the auto-cleaning. It’s working for you while you’re juicing, as well as after, so cleanup won’t be too much of a challenge. Lucky you. You get all of these benefits from a very small package, too, so finding a place for it to live in your kitchen won’t be a major trial-and-error process. We don’t usually mention warranties, but we have to with this one—it’s guaranteed for 15 years!!

Clearly, we love a lot of the things offered by this option. But we don’t love everything. The high price tag is going to be a dealbreaker for a lot of people, and that’s disappointing. Other than that, there are just a couple of minor things…you’ll need to wash all of the removable parts by hand (no dishwashers!), and you’ll need to do a little extra prep to get your ingredients in the chute. That’s all!

What Reviewers Are Saying About the Omega VSJ843QS Vertical Slow Masticating Juicer

Reviewers are blown away by the Omega VSJ843QS Vertical Slow Masticating Juicer. The juice quality is exceptional—no pulp, tons of flavour and nutrition—and the machine is really easy to care for. People love that it does a lot of self-cleaning. Makes their life easier. They all agree that the high price is representative of this juicer’s value. None of them would choose a different option if they could go back.

Omega VSJ843QS Vertical Slow Masticating Juicer Specifications

Omega VSJ843QS Vertical Slow Masticating Juicer Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Ultra slow 43 RPM auger preserves as much nutrition as possible

  • Very compact and easy to store

  • Has a reverse function to clear clogs

  • Has an auto-cleaning system to increase efficiency and minimize cleanup time

Cons:

Our Final Thoughts on the Omega VSJ843QS Vertical Slow Masticating Juicer

  • Performance: 5/5

  • Usability: 5/5

  • Price: 2/5

  • Quality: 5/5

All in all, the Omega VSJ843QS Vertical Slow Masticating Juicer is one of the best juicers money can buy. It’s not quite perfect, but it comes as close as it can. We feel confident guaranteeing that you won’t regret this one.

Our Budget Pick

Hamilton Beach 67601A Juicer Machine Review

What We Think of the Hamilton Beach 67601A Juicer Machine

The Hamilton Beach 67601A Juicer Machine might not offer the best performance in the world (we’ll dive into this later), but it does have some things working in its favour, too. Aside from the budget-friendly price tag, we mean. It’s got a powerful motor to make quick work of any ingredients you add—you’ll never be waiting long for your next juice fix. And we’re talking seconds, here.

With a large chute, you won’t need to prep your ingredients much before tossing them in, and the controls are remarkably easy to use. You’ll appreciate that all the parts are dishwasher-safe, too. We sure do.

Unfortunately, in this case, you do get what you pay for. You’ll need low expectations to match the low price. This thing is messy. On both ends. It doesn’t come with a juice cup, and due to the spout location, it’s pretty hard to find a cup that fits. Unless you stand there and hold the cup up, you’re going to end up with some juice spray. The pulp bin also doesn’t attach very well, so you may get a mess on that side too.

Our other concern is with the overall juicing process. While the centrifuge style is fast, it isn’t very effective. It’s going to waste a fair amount of juice-it gets discarded with the pulp. We’re disappointed by this, too.

What Reviewers Are Saying About the Hamilton Beach 67601A Juicer Machine

Reviewers have mixed feelings about the Hamilton Beach 67601A Juicer Machine. There are some things they like—the simple controls, the cleaning brush, and the cupboard-friendly size—and some things they don’t like—the mess on both ends and the wasted juice. Most people still have no regrets about their purchase though, especially because it’s so affordable.

Hamilton Beach 67601A Juicer Machine Specifications

Hamilton Beach 67601A Juicer Machine Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Centrifugal extractor makes quick work of all fruits and veggies

  • All removable parts are dishwasher-safe

  • Extra-large pulp bin and cleaning brush are included

  • Very simple controls

Cons:

  • Doesn’t come with a juice cup/pitcher—hard to find a cup that will prevent juice spray

  • Pulp bin doesn’t attach very well

  • Decent portion of juice is discarded with the pulp

Our Final Thoughts on the Hamilton Beach 67601A Juicer Machine

  • Performance: 3.5/5

  • Usability: 5/5

  • Price: 5/5

  • Quality: 4/5

All in all, the Hamilton Beach 67601A Juicer Machine is the best option for people who want to spend as little as possible on a functional machine. It has its flaws, but it gets the job done at the end of the day. That’s about all we can ask for at this price point, right?

Cuisinart CJE-1000 5-Speed Juice Extractor Review

What We Think of the Cuisinart CJE-1000 5-Speed Juice Extractor

The Cuisinart CJE-1000 5-Speed Juice Extractor is a really great option. Its five-speed design is probably the first thing that jumped out at us—most of the time, we’re lucky to see two speeds. The extra speeds let you be really precise with your juicing and treat your ingredients the right way. The mesh filter helps with that, too. It keeps your juice ultra-pure.

One of the other things we love about it is the spout design. It has an anti-drip shape so there’s never any mess, and the flow rate is adjustable too. Tons of versatility with this one. A 2-litre pulp container, a 1-litre juice pitcher (with a lid!), and a cleaning brush are all included. No extra supplies needed!

Thankfully, there aren’t any performance issues to share with you about this one. But we do have two minor low points that you should know about. This option is pretty bulky, so it won’t be very cupboard-friendly. Hopefully you have some counterspace free. Also, there are a lot of removable parts, and they are tricky to clean by hand. If you choose to go the dishwasher route, it’ll claim most of the top rack.

What Reviewers Are Saying About the Cuisinart CJE-1000 5-Speed Juice Extractor

Reviewers are quite happy with their Cuisinart CJE-1000 5-Speed Juice Extractors.  They love that they can adjust the performance based on what ingredients they’re using for their juice, and the lid for the juice pitcher makes it really easy to store extra juice in the fridge without needing to dirty another container. It can be a bit tricky to clean thoroughly, but that’s really the only complaint.

Cuisinart CJE-1000 5-Speed Juice Extractor Specifications

Cuisinart CJE-1000 5-Speed Juice Extractor Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • All removable parts are dishwasher-safe

  • Filter design reduces foam and increases juice purity

  • Comes with a 2 L pulp container, 1 Qt juice pitcher with lid, and cleaning brush

  • Has an anti-drip and adjustable spout plus an easy unlock-and-lift system

Cons:

Our Final Thoughts on the Cuisinart CJE-1000 5-Speed Juice Extractor

  • Performance: 5/5

  • Usability: 5/5

  • Price: 4/5

  • Quality: 5/5

Overall, the Cuisinart CJE-1000 5-Speed Juice Extractor is a really solid option. It might not be the most cupboard-friendly thing on the planet, but you’ll love the convenience and precision juicing that it offers. It has a bunch of thoughtful bonus features, too. You could do a lot worse!

AmzChef ZM1501 Slow Juicer Machine Review

What We Think of the AmzChef ZM1501 Slow Juicer Machine

We like a lot about the AmzChef ZM1501 Slow Juicer Machine. The auger design is one of our favourite things. It has seven different segments to process your fruits and vegetables to the absolute max—this means you’ll have plenty of juice and as little waste as possible. And since it only spins at 90-110 RPM, you won’t have any of the nutrient loss that you see with faster (and heat-producing) juicers.

We also love the reverse function. It’s super handy. You won’t ever have to dig out clogged food by hand (no one needs that mess, right?). The reverse function will clear it in seconds. Plus, it makes cleaning a breeze. Since your juicer will come with its own cleaning brush, juice cup, and pomace cup (for the pulp), you won’t need to scrounge up any extra supplies.

There are only a couple of minor things we would change about this option if we could. First of all, while the removable parts are all very easy to clean, they aren’t dishwasher-safe. This alone might be a dealbreaker for some of you. Also, the chute is pretty small at less than 2 inches, so you’ll need to do more prep work for this one than other options. Just so you’re aware.

What Reviewers Are Saying About the AmzChef ZM1501 Slow Juicer Machine

Reviewers absolutely love the AmzChef ZM1501 Slow Juicer Machine. It’s super easy to use and also super easy to take apart for cleaning. It only takes a couple of minutes to get it ready to go again. People have noticed that their juice is completely pulp-free, and even the included cups are durable and will last for years. They have no complaints with this one.

AmzChef ZM1501 Slow Juicer Machine Specifications

AmzChef ZM1501 Slow Juicer Machine Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • 7-segment auger produces a high juice yield with less foam

  • Has a reverse function to clear clogged food and make cleaning easier

  • Comes with a juice cup, pomace cup, and cleaning brush

  • Slow auger speed (90-110 RPM) helps prevent nutrient loss

Cons:

Our Final Thoughts on the AmzChef ZM1501 Slow Juicer Machine

  • Performance: 5/5

  • Usability: 5/5

  • Price: 5/5

  • Quality: 5/5

Overall, the AmzChef ZM1501 Slow Juicer Machine was an easy addition to our top five. It’s priced well, made with high-quality parts, and is incredibly user-friendly. No matter what types of juices you plan on making, this little machine will get the job done right.

How to Properly Choose Your Juicer

Price

Some juicers are less than $90, others are $600 and up. Most people will be very happy with a juicer under $300, though. In general, more expensive juicers will be more durable, will come with more accessories, and will produce a more nutritious juice with less waste.

Chute Size

Chute size matters a lot when it comes to juicers. Many models have large 3” chutes to almost eliminate the need to prep your ingredients, but others are 2” or smaller. If you’re always in a hurry, you’ll want a juicer with a 3” chute. Trust us.

Speeds

Many juicers are built with only one speed, and these are typically the slower masticating juicers that help preserve the nutrients in the fruits and vegetables. Centrifugal juicers typically have at least two speeds, though some can have five or more. For that style of juicer, more speeds are better as it allows you to match the juicing intensity to the ingredients—slower speeds for soft ingredients and faster speeds for tougher ingredients.

Dishwasher Safe Parts

Many juicers come with dishwasher-safe parts, but many don’t. If cleanup isn’t a chore you want to do by hand at your kitchen sink, you’ll want to make this feature a priority.

Overall Size

Since most juicers need to live in your kitchen to be accessible, the size matters. Some juicers are quite compact and fit easily in a cupboard, others are large and need to live on the kitchen counter. Choose your size carefully.

Ottawa orders TikTok’s Canadian arm to be dissolved

Published

 on

The federal government is ordering the dissolution of TikTok’s Canadian business after a national security review of the Chinese company behind the social media platform, but stopped short of ordering people to stay off the app.

Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced the government’s “wind up” demand Wednesday, saying it is meant to address “risks” related to ByteDance Ltd.’s establishment of TikTok Technology Canada Inc.

“The decision was based on the information and evidence collected over the course of the review and on the advice of Canada’s security and intelligence community and other government partners,” he said in a statement.

The announcement added that the government is not blocking Canadians’ access to the TikTok application or their ability to create content.

However, it urged people to “adopt good cybersecurity practices and assess the possible risks of using social media platforms and applications, including how their information is likely to be protected, managed, used and shared by foreign actors, as well as to be aware of which country’s laws apply.”

Champagne’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment seeking details about what evidence led to the government’s dissolution demand, how long ByteDance has to comply and why the app is not being banned.

A TikTok spokesperson said in a statement that the shutdown of its Canadian offices will mean the loss of hundreds of well-paying local jobs.

“We will challenge this order in court,” the spokesperson said.

“The TikTok platform will remain available for creators to find an audience, explore new interests and for businesses to thrive.”

The federal Liberals ordered a national security review of TikTok in September 2023, but it was not public knowledge until The Canadian Press reported in March that it was investigating the company.

At the time, it said the review was based on the expansion of a business, which it said constituted the establishment of a new Canadian entity. It declined to provide any further details about what expansion it was reviewing.

A government database showed a notification of new business from TikTok in June 2023. It said Network Sense Ventures Ltd. in Toronto and Vancouver would engage in “marketing, advertising, and content/creator development activities in relation to the use of the TikTok app in Canada.”

Even before the review, ByteDance and TikTok were lightning rod for privacy and safety concerns because Chinese national security laws compel organizations in the country to assist with intelligence gathering.

Such concerns led the U.S. House of Representatives to pass a bill in March designed to ban TikTok unless its China-based owner sells its stake in the business.

Champagne’s office has maintained Canada’s review was not related to the U.S. bill, which has yet to pass.

Canada’s review was carried out through the Investment Canada Act, which allows the government to investigate any foreign investment with potential to might harm national security.

While cabinet can make investors sell parts of the business or shares, Champagne has said the act doesn’t allow him to disclose details of the review.

Wednesday’s dissolution order was made in accordance with the act.

The federal government banned TikTok from its mobile devices in February 2023 following the launch of an investigation into the company by federal and provincial privacy commissioners.

Here is how to prepare your online accounts for when you die

Published

 on

LONDON (AP) — Most people have accumulated a pile of data — selfies, emails, videos and more — on their social media and digital accounts over their lifetimes. What happens to it when we die?

It’s wise to draft a will spelling out who inherits your physical assets after you’re gone, but don’t forget to take care of your digital estate too. Friends and family might treasure files and posts you’ve left behind, but they could get lost in digital purgatory after you pass away unless you take some simple steps.

Here’s how you can prepare your digital life for your survivors:

Apple

The iPhone maker lets you nominate a “ legacy contact ” who can access your Apple account’s data after you die. The company says it’s a secure way to give trusted people access to photos, files and messages. To set it up you’ll need an Apple device with a fairly recent operating system — iPhones and iPads need iOS or iPadOS 15.2 and MacBooks needs macOS Monterey 12.1.

For iPhones, go to settings, tap Sign-in & Security and then Legacy Contact. You can name one or more people, and they don’t need an Apple ID or device.

You’ll have to share an access key with your contact. It can be a digital version sent electronically, or you can print a copy or save it as a screenshot or PDF.

Take note that there are some types of files you won’t be able to pass on — including digital rights-protected music, movies and passwords stored in Apple’s password manager. Legacy contacts can only access a deceased user’s account for three years before Apple deletes the account.

Google

Google takes a different approach with its Inactive Account Manager, which allows you to share your data with someone if it notices that you’ve stopped using your account.

When setting it up, you need to decide how long Google should wait — from three to 18 months — before considering your account inactive. Once that time is up, Google can notify up to 10 people.

You can write a message informing them you’ve stopped using the account, and, optionally, include a link to download your data. You can choose what types of data they can access — including emails, photos, calendar entries and YouTube videos.

There’s also an option to automatically delete your account after three months of inactivity, so your contacts will have to download any data before that deadline.

Facebook and Instagram

Some social media platforms can preserve accounts for people who have died so that friends and family can honor their memories.

When users of Facebook or Instagram die, parent company Meta says it can memorialize the account if it gets a “valid request” from a friend or family member. Requests can be submitted through an online form.

The social media company strongly recommends Facebook users add a legacy contact to look after their memorial accounts. Legacy contacts can do things like respond to new friend requests and update pinned posts, but they can’t read private messages or remove or alter previous posts. You can only choose one person, who also has to have a Facebook account.

You can also ask Facebook or Instagram to delete a deceased user’s account if you’re a close family member or an executor. You’ll need to send in documents like a death certificate.

TikTok

The video-sharing platform says that if a user has died, people can submit a request to memorialize the account through the settings menu. Go to the Report a Problem section, then Account and profile, then Manage account, where you can report a deceased user.

Once an account has been memorialized, it will be labeled “Remembering.” No one will be able to log into the account, which prevents anyone from editing the profile or using the account to post new content or send messages.

X

It’s not possible to nominate a legacy contact on Elon Musk’s social media site. But family members or an authorized person can submit a request to deactivate a deceased user’s account.

Passwords

Besides the major online services, you’ll probably have dozens if not hundreds of other digital accounts that your survivors might need to access. You could just write all your login credentials down in a notebook and put it somewhere safe. But making a physical copy presents its own vulnerabilities. What if you lose track of it? What if someone finds it?

Instead, consider a password manager that has an emergency access feature. Password managers are digital vaults that you can use to store all your credentials. Some, like Keeper,Bitwarden and NordPass, allow users to nominate one or more trusted contacts who can access their keys in case of an emergency such as a death.

But there are a few catches: Those contacts also need to use the same password manager and you might have to pay for the service.

Google’s partnership with AI startup Anthropic faces a UK competition investigation

Published

 on

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s competition watchdog said Thursday it’s opening a formal investigation into Google’s partnership with artificial intelligence startup Anthropic.

The Competition and Markets Authority said it has “sufficient information” to launch an initial probe after it sought input earlier this year on whether the deal would stifle competition.

The CMA has until Dec. 19 to decide whether to approve the deal or escalate its investigation.

“Google is committed to building the most open and innovative AI ecosystem in the world,” the company said. “Anthropic is free to use multiple cloud providers and does, and we don’t demand exclusive tech rights.”

San Francisco-based Anthropic was founded in 2021 by siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, who previously worked at ChatGPT maker OpenAI. The company has focused on increasing the safety and reliability of AI models. Google reportedly agreed last year to make a multibillion-dollar investment in Anthropic, which has a popular chatbot named Claude.

Anthropic said it’s cooperating with the regulator and will provide “the complete picture about Google’s investment and our commercial collaboration.”

“We are an independent company and none of our strategic partnerships or investor relationships diminish the independence of our corporate governance or our freedom to partner with others,” it said in a statement.

The U.K. regulator has been scrutinizing a raft of AI deals as investment money floods into the industry to capitalize on the artificial intelligence boom. Last month it cleared Anthropic’s $4 billion deal with Amazon and it has also signed off on Microsoft’s deals with two other AI startups, Inflection and Mistral.
