Yankees fans who interfered with Betts’ catch are banned from Game 5 of the World Series

Published

NEW YORK (AP) — Two New York Yankees fans who were ejected from Game 4 of the World Series for interfering with Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts have been banned from Game 5 on Wednesday night.

Betts leaped at the retaining wall in foul territory and caught Gleyber Torres’ pop fly in the first inning Tuesday night, but a fan in the first row with a gray Yankees road jersey grabbed Betts’ glove with both hands and pulled the ball out. Another fan grabbed Betts’ bare hand.

“Not good. There’s no place for that. It’s as simple as that,” New York manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday. “Come here, cheer, root for your team, whatever. No place for that. Should never have hands on anyone.”

The Yankees called the behavior “egregious and unacceptable.” The team said the fans involved are season-ticket holders, and the club gave their Game 5 tickets to an ill child and his family who were unable to attend a kids-only news conference at the ballpark in September to mark Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

“Yankee Stadium is known for its energy and intensity, however the exuberance of supporting one’s team can never cross the line into intentionally putting players at physical risk,” the team said Wednesday in a statement. “The Yankees and Major League Baseball maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward the type of behavior displayed last night. These fans will not be permitted to attend tonight’s game in any capacity.”

The Major League Baseball Players Association also expressed concern about player safety and security.

“As with every incident at the ballpark that affects players, we have been in regular contact with league security officials since last night’s incident and will be closely tracking both the response to that incident and the protective measures taken going forward, beginning tonight,” the union said in a statement.

Dodgers left fielder Teoscar Hernández said he didn’t think there was anything to worry about Wednesday night.

“I’ve played here for six years against the Yankees, and I never see anything go wrong with the opposite team,” he said.

“Fans know they cannot do that, what that fan did last night,” Hernández added. “It happens, but unfortunately for him, he’s going to be thinking about that play last night for a long time. … I’ve never seen anything like it, but now that I see pictures and videos and all that stuff, it’s a little crazy.”

When the play occurred, the Dodgers had an early two-run lead on Freddie Freeman’s two-run homer.

“I saw it. It was maybe one of the more extreme — kind of trying to rip a ball out. But at the same time, that’s kind of New York. I feel like that’s what you expect out here. You expect some unique things,” Yankees left fielder Alex Verdugo said Wednesday.

“At the end of the day, I didn’t feel it was too serious. I think Mookie kind of shook it off, too. That’s just kind of the passion, I guess, New Yorkers have.”

Betts reacted angrily in the moment, but he quickly calmed down when Torres was immediately called out by umpires on fan interference.

“When it comes to the person in play, it doesn’t matter,” Betts said after the Yankees extended the series with an 11-4 victory. “We lost. It’s irrelevant. I’m fine. He’s fine. Everything’s cool. We lost the game and that’s what I’m kind of focused on. We’ve got to turn the page and get ready for tomorrow.”

It was the second time Torres had an at-bat impacted by fan interference in this World Series. With two outs in the ninth inning of Game 1 at Dodger Stadium, Torres hit a fly ball to left field, and a fan reached over the top of the fence and caught the ball. Torres was awarded a double.

Torres hit a three-run homer to right field in the eighth inning Tuesday night.

This story corrects that Torres’ homer did not provide the final runs of the night for the Yankees.

Copa del Rey games and other sporting events postponed after deadly floods devastate southern Spain

Published

 on

VALENCIA, Spain (AP) — The Copa del Rey matches involving Valencia and Levante have been postponed following floods that have killed at least 95 people and caused havoc in southern Spain.

Other sporting events were also affected by Tuesday’s flash floods that swept away cars, turned village streets into rivers and disrupted rail lines and highways in the worst natural disaster to hit the European nation in recent memory.

The Spanish league planned to postpone all weekend matches in the Valencia region, including those of Valencia against Real Madrid and Villarreal against Rayo Vallecano. Three second-division games also were expected to be postponed.

Clubs, soccer stars and other athletes — including Vinícius Júnior, Luka Modric, Sergio Ramos, Diego Simeone and Thibaut Courtois — posted messages of support on social media.

“Real Madrid is deeply saddened and expresses its solidarity with all the people affected by this catastrophe, to whom it conveys all its full support and sympathy,” the club said.

Both Madrid and Barcelona held a moment of silence before their training sessions on Wednesday.

Spanish tennis players Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz both joined in the messages of support, as did Formula One driver Carlos Sainz.

“Today was a sad day with the suffering and pain caused by the (floods),” Nadal said on X. “Everyone’s hearts are hurting seeing those images.”

Valencia was set to play Parla Escuela in the first round of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, while Levante was scheduled to visit Pontevedra.

Other midweek Copa games in the southern region were canceled as well.

The season-ending MotoGP race in Valencia in two weeks was also in doubt after reports of heavy damage caused by the floods at the Circuito Ricardo Tormo.

Some basketball games also had to be rescheduled as travel was affected throughout Spain.

Rainstorms that started Tuesday and continued Wednesday caused flooding across southern and eastern Spain, stretching from Malaga to Valencia. Muddy torrents tumbled vehicles down streets at high speeds while debris and household items swirled in the water. Police and rescue services used helicopters to lift people from their homes and rubber boats to reach drivers stranded atop cars.

Elks name three-time Grey Cup champion Chris Morris as president and CEO

Published

 on

EDMONTON – Chris Morris has been named the new president and chief executive of the Edmonton Elks, the club announced today.

Morris was an offensive lineman with Edmonton from 1992 to 2005 and won Grey Cup titles with the club in 1993, 2003 and 2005.

He spent the last 12 years as head coach of the University of Alberta’s U Sports football team.

Morris takes over from Rick LeLacheur, who was brought out of retirement to take on the role of president and CEO on an interim basis after the departure of Victor Cui in August 2023.

Morris’s first duties will include deciding the futures of general manager Geroy Simon and head coach Jarious Jackson.

Simon and Jackson took over the team on an interim basis after the Elks fired former head coach and GM Chris Jones after an 0-5 start. The team had a winning record (7-6) after the change.

The team said Morris will be introduced in his new role in a press conference Thursday.

Elks owner Larry Thompson called Morris a “winner and a leader” during his time playing for Edmonton.

“As a teacher, principal, and most recently coach of the Golden Bears, Chris has strived for excellence and commanded respect,” Thompson said in a statement.

“His connection to our past, leadership attributes, and understanding of what it takes to win made him the right choice to lead us into 2025 and beyond.”

Morris takes on a once proud team that has struggled in recent years and hasn’t made the playoffs since 2019.

Thompson was revealed as the club’s first private owner in August. The franchise had been community owned since its founding in 1949.
