York United manager says while spying in soccer is not unusual, it’s not for him

Published

 on

Benjamin Mora’s coaching career has taken him from his native Mexico to Malaysia and now Canada, with the Canadian Premier League’s York United FC.

As such, the drone spying scandal at the Paris Olympics surrounding the Canadian women’s team does not come as a surprise to him.

“What is spying?” Mora asked. “I mean, strategy in war, all over the world, has always been knowing what your opponent is going to do to you, knowing their shape, knowing who they are going to line up.

“In many, many countries that I’ve been in and I’ve watched football — I’m taking about Malaysia, I’m talking about Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Thailand — I’ve seen things, of course, I’ve seen situations like this.”

Mora referenced Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa, who admitted in January 2019 to spying on opponents while in charge of England’s Leeds United. The club was eventually fined 200,000 pounds ($353,550) and given a severe reprimand by the English Football League.

While admitting to spying — in one instance, a member of the Leeds’ backroom staff, equipped with pliers, binoculars and disguised clothing was apprehended outside Derby County’s training ground — Bielsa insisted no specific rules were broken.

“All the information I need to clarify, I gather it without watching the training session of the opponent, so why did I send someone to watch them? Just because I thought I wasn’t violating the norm. I gathered information that I can obtain in another way,” Bielsa, a native of Argentina, said at the time.

“We feel guilty if we don’t work enough. (Watching the opponents train) allows us to have less anxiety and in my case I am stupid enough to allow this kind of behaviour.”

Mora said it’s not his kind of behaviour.

“I don’t do that. I don’t like it because I don’t need it,” said the York coach.

Mora, whose team is in Langley, B.C., to play Pacific FC on Friday noted that his players trained at Pacific’s Starlight Stadium on Wednesday and Thursday.

When some of them asked him whether that allowed Pacific staff to see them train, he replied: “I don’t really care. I’m not hiding anything.”

“But I think it’s unethical,” Mora said of spying.

It also goes against sportsmanship and respecting your opponent, he added.

“Just let them do their job. And you do your job. And you study what you have on hand. That is the last games they played, their shape, how they modify. What are their variants … I think that is enough to know what they are going to do. You don’t need to really go spy on them. You’re not going to learn anything.”

And Mora believes the current spotlight on such spying — and the heavy sanctions handed down to Canada by FIFA — are for the best.

“It’s good that they put their hand on the table and said ‘We will not permit these kind of situations.”

Weekend grizzly attack in Alberta linked to fatal attack three years ago

Published

 on

MADDEN, Alta. – Alberta officials are warning residents of a hamlet to be vigilant following a recent grizzly bear attack by an animal they say killed a person three years ago.

The province says Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services received a report on Sunday from RCMP about a person being attacked by a female grizzly near Madden, about 45 kilometres northwest of Calgary.

The victim, who was in a forested area at the time, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The province says the bear remains at large and was with what it described as “subadult” bears at the time of the attack.

DNA samples have determined the bear was also responsible for a fatal attack that occurred in 2021 near the village of Waiparous, the province says.

That attack, which happened in early May of that year, killed a man who was out for a run.

“Fish and wildlife officers are actively working to locate the bear, including setting numerous traps and deploying low-flying aircraft,” a statement from the province on Wednesday evening said.

It added that residents may also notice an increased presence of fish and wildlife officers patrolling in the area. People are being encouraged to exercise caution when outdoors, including carrying deterrents such as noisemakers and bear spray.

People are urged to report any sightings of a female grizzly bear with subadult bears in the Madden area, specifically between Lochend Road and Highway 22, to the Report-A-Poacher hotline at 1-800-642-3200.

Published

 on

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – The Peel Regional Police Special Victims Unit is asking for the public’s help in finding a suspect who is believed to have sexually assaulted two senior women Tuesday morning in Mississauga.

Police say a 96-year-old woman was walking in the area of Mississauga Valley Boulevard and the Cooksville Creek Trail at around 7 a.m. when she was allegedly sexually assaulted by a male suspect.

Less than an hour later, another woman, a 66-year-old, was walking along that trail and the same man is suspected of sexually assaulting her as well.

Police say the suspect escaped the crime scene and neither woman was physically injured.

The suspect is described as a Caucasian male in his early 20s, approximately 5-8, skinny build, clean shaven, wearing a plain zip-up hoodie and straight-cut black jeans.

Authorities are asking people to call the Special Victims Unit or Peel Crime Stoppers if they have any information on the incidents.

Imanaga, 2 relievers combine for no-hitter, lead Cubs over Pirates 12-0

Published

 on

CHICAGO (AP) — Shota Imanaga and two Cubs relievers combined on a no-hitter, leading Chicago over the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-0 on Wednesday night.

Imanaga (12-3), a 31-year-old left-hander in his first season with the Cubs after pitching in Japan for eight seasons, struck out seven and walked two over seven innings. He threw 66 of 95 pitches for strikes.

He needed 25 pitches to get through the second inning. His season high is 103 pitches against St. Louis on June 15. Imanaga has not gotten an out in the eighth inning.

Imanaga agreed in January to a $53 million, four-year contract. Chicago paid a $9,825,000 posting fee to the Yokohama BayStars of Japan’s Central League.

Nate Pearson pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning and Porter Hodge a perfect ninth in the Cubs’ 18th no-hitter, the first since Zach Davies, Ryan Tepera, Andrew Chafin and Craig Kimbrel combined to hold Los Angeles hitless at Dodger Stadium on June 24, 2021.

Chicago players celebrated when shortstop Dansby Swanson threw to first baseman Michael Busch for the final out on Oneil Cruz’s grounder, but were more muted than during celebrations after individual no-hitters.

Chicago had not pitched a no-hitter at Wrigley Field since Milt Pappas against San Diego on Sept. 2, 1972 — Pappas was one pitch from a perfect game when Bruce Froemming called ball four on a full-count pitch to Larry Stahl. Garry Jestadt then popped out.

This was the fourth no-hitter this season after complete-game efforts by Houston’s Ronel Blanco against Toronto on April 1, San Diego’s Dylan Cease at Washington on July 25 and San Francisco’s Blake Snell at Cincinnati on April 2.

Nico Hoerner, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Dansby Swanson each had three of Chicago’s 17 hits, with Swanson and Crow-Armstrong both finishing a triple shy of the cycle.

Domingo Germán (0-1), who pitched a perfect game last year for the New York Yankees against Oakland, allowed seven runs — six earned — and nine hits in three innings.

Seiya Suzuki hit an RBI single in the first, and Chicago opened a 4-0 lead in the second when Crow-Armstrong had a run-scoring double in the second and Happ hit a two-run single.

Swanson’s two-run homer and Crow-Armstrong’s solo shot boosted the lead to 7-0 in the third. Cody Bellinger hit a two-run homer in the sixth against Kyle Nicolas.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Pirates: OF Andrew McCutchen was a late scratch because of a knee issue.

Cubs: LHP Justin Steele (tendinitis in pitching elbow) and RHP Jorge López (strained right groin) were put on the 15-day IL, Steele retroactive to Sunday and López to Tuesday. Reliever Hayden Wesneski, out since July 19 with an injured right forearm, will start a rehab assignment at Triple-A Iowa.

UP NEXT

Pirates: LHP Bailey Falter (6-7, 4.41 ERA) was set to take the mound Thursday when the Pirates return home to face the Nationals.

Cubs: RHP Javier Assad (7-4, 3.21) was scheduled to start Friday in the series opener at home against the New York Yankees, who start RHP Luis Gil (12-6).
