Driving while banned leads to charges
A Guelph male faces new charges after he was caught driving Friday while banned from doing so.
Approximately 6 p.m., officers were on patrol on McElderry Road when they queried a motor vehicle and learned the owner was on terms not to occupy the driver’s seat of a vehicle following his arrest in September for impaired driving and dangerous driving.
The vehicle was stopped and the owner was confirmed to be driving. A 43-year-old Guelph male is charged with failing to comply with an undertaking and driving while suspended. He will appear in a Guelph court January 25, 2022.
Six drivers taken off road during RIDE
There were no criminal charges laid, but six motorists were temporarily taken off the road during RIDE spot checks Saturday night.
Guelph Police Service officers conducted RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) checks at two locations near the downtown core. Approximately 800 vehicles were stopped, and 25 drivers were asked to provide breath samples into approved screening devices.
Four drivers were handed 72-hour licence suspensions and had their vehicles impounded for a similar timeframe after registering warnings on the device, meaning their blood alcohol level was between 50 milligrams and 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 milligrams.
Two other motorists, both novice drivers, had their licences suspended for 72 hours after testing positive for cannabis on approved drug screening tests.
Other tickets included during the RIDE checks included driving while suspended, driving with alcohol or cannabis readily available and failing to surrender a driver’s licence.
Increased RIDE spot checks will continue throughout the holiday season. The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home.
