At the Roland Garros in Paris, France- World No.1, Iga Swiatek, has claimed her second French Open title after defeating American teenager Coco Gauff 6-1 6-3 in the women’s French Open finals.
Swiatek is now the ninth woman in the Open era to win multiple Roland Garros titles and the fifth No. 1 seed to win the French Open in 25 years.
“First I want to congratulate you (Gauff) because you are doing an amazing job. You are progressing all the time. You will find it and you will be there, I am pretty sure of that.
Two years ago, winning this title was something amazing. Honestly, I couldn’t expect better but this time I feel like I worked hard and did everything to get here even though it was pretty tough. The pressure was big.
I want to thank my team, you guys, without you I wouldn’t be here, I am sure of that. I am glad every piece has come together and we can do this. We deserve to be here. Thanks for your full support all the time no matter what. Also to my Dad, I wouldn’t be here without him, so I have to thank him for everything. Everyone who is in my box, thank you all,” said Swiatek.
Just four years ago, both Swiatek and Gauff played in the French Open girl’s tournament, with Gauff winning the title and Swiatek losing in the semifinals, but Swiatek, nearly three years Gauff’s elder, has stormed to the front of the women’s game since then with her aggressive style, a powerful package of skills and detail-oriented approach to training.
Swiatek has not lost since February, compiling a 42-3 record in 2022 and winning the titles in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, Rome and now Paris, where she broke through in 2020, winning her first major title without losing a set.
