VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — While there are no new cases of the newly named CoVid-19 coronavirus to report in the province, those who already have it are doing well.
British Columbia’s Provincial Health Officer Doctor Bonnie Henry says the four people diagnosed with the new virus in Metro Vancouver are still symptomatic, but recovering.
While no new cases have been diagnosed as of Monday, she says authorities are still asking people coming from the coronavirus zone in China to self-isolate after they get here.
“I can tell you that there is a small number of people that have come to Canada from the Wuhan province in the last few days, and they are doing that,” Henry says.
She adds those who are being self-isolated are receiving assistance from local health authorities and local groups.
“There is a number of social media groups/networks now that are supporting people, particularly in the Lower Mainland,” Henry says.
She continues to add that people are “able to support [people with the virus] with things like groceries, picking them up from the airport or driving out their car for them.”
She also addresses the concerns in the local Chinese community by saying they shouldn’t be worried about eating out in a group or going to public gatherings. She tells NEWS 1130 the risk of the virus spreading in B.C. remains low.
The World Health Organization has also warned the spread of misinformation about the coronavirus has become a major obstacle.
Worldwide, there are now more than 43,000 cases of the CoVid-19 coronavirus, resulting in more than 1,000 deaths. The vast majority of those sick are in China, which recorded 108 virus deaths on Monday, the highest single-day figure so far.
