Once again, Durham Region’s health department is reporting the presence of the West Nile virus in trapped mosquitoes.
Officials received confirmation Thursday. The mosquitoes-in-question were collected from trap sites in Ajax, Clarington and north Oshawa.
The virus was already confirmed at the Clarington site on July 21 and at the Ajax site on August 19.
Here are some ways to avoid mosquito bites:
- Wearing shoes, socks and light-coloured clothing, including long-sleeve tops and full-length pants, especially at dawn or dusk.
- Using insect repellent while following the usual safety tips.
- Removing standing water from your property.
- Keeping your windows and door screens in good repair.
Symptoms of West Nile include fever, headache, body ache, nausea, vomiting and a rash on the chest, stomach or back. In some cases, it can lead to muscle weakness, a stiff neck, confusion, tremors, numbness and a sudden sensitivity to light.
Symptoms usually develop between two and 15 days after the mosquito bites you.
