Males arrested in fraud investigation
Two males were arrested Thursday for allegedly trying to open a fraudulent bank account.
Guelph Police Service officers were called Thursday afternoon to a bank in the city’s south end. Staff were suspicious of identity documents presented by two males attempting to open an account.
Officers arrived and determined the males’ true identities did not match the name on the documents being used. They were arrested, and a search incident to arrest revealed several documents in a different incorrect name.
A 48-year-old male from Niagara on the Lake and a 35-year-old male from Markham are jointly charged with uttering a forged document, possessing an identity document, identity fraud, identity theft and attempt fraud over $5,000. The Markham male also faces two additional counts of possessing an identity document.
Both will appear in a Guelph court November 29, 2022.
Apartment building break-in
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after someone broke into a west-end apartment building this week.
Officers were called Thursday afternoon to an address in the area of Willow Road and Ajax Street. The complainant advised someone broke into the building early Wednesday morning. Surveillance video revealed a suspect using a tool to pry open the front door before stealing something from the laundry room.
The suspect was wearing a green jacket, black pants, grey running shoes, a backpack and a facemask. Stolen vehicle recovered in Guelph
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a vehicle stolen from another jurisdiction was recovered in downtown Guelph.
On Thursday, a message was received from another police service regarding a white 2015 GMC Sierra which had twice been ticketed for parking offences by City of Guelph Bylaw Compliance officials. At the time the tickets were issued the pickup had not yet been reported stolen.
On Thursday morning Guelph Police Service officers attended a parking lot in the area of Carden Street and Macdonell Street where the truck was located and seized. Surveillance video showed two males and a female exit the vehicle at approximately 8:45 a.m. Thursday.
