When: 1PM: Saturday November 12th,
Where: Norman Bethune Sq. Corner of Guy and Maisonneuve
What: Solidarity rally with imprisoned Egyptian activists and for real climate justice
The Egyptian diaspora and climate justice activist are responding to a call made by Egyptian activists who are calling on trade unionists and climate justice activists outside Egypt to take to the streets on 12 November as part of a day of action around the COP27 talks.
The global day of action is to highlight Egypts attempt at Greenwashing its brutal military regime through hosting the annual COP-27 talks this year. As the climate conference takes place Alaa Abdelfattah, a political prisoner and activist in Egypt has been on hunger strike now for over 200 days. He is not alone.
The Egyptian government, host of the annual UN COP climate talks this year, has detained tens of thousands of people for simply expressing their opinions, joining opposition groups or attempting to organize protests and strikes. The regime has also created fake pro-government ‘climate campaigns’ designed to hide its real record of support for fossil fuel extraction in the Mediterranean and its alliance with Western governments and global energy companies.
Egypt’s military dictatorship is strongly supported by Western governments through arms deals, diplomatic backing and trade relations.
This is why activists are rallying here in Montreal in order to raise the demands of prisoners in Egypt where it counts
