Officials in Uxbridge are confirming the presence of avian influenza (H5N1) in a pair of wild geese.
The township first noted in March that it was monitoring reports of geese in distress around Elgin Pond, along with dead birds.
Uxbridge-Scugog Animal Control retrieved the birds. Two were sent to researchers at the University of Guelph, where they tested positive for avian flu.
A wave of H5N1 has been making its way around the continent in recent months.
On Tuesday, it was reported that a dog in Oshawa had tested positive – the only case of its kind in Canada.
That dog died after developing symptoms.
You are being urged to avoid contact with sick or dead birds, and to keep your pets away from them.
The virus is considered to be a low risk to humans.
You can report any animals in distress on municipal property to Uxbridge-Scugog Animal Control at [email protected], or 905-985-9547.
