WATERLOO REGION — Grand River Transit buses won’t be running Monday because operators and other unionized staff are on strike.
Late Sunday evening, the Region of Waterloo announced that members of UNIFOR, Local 4304, representing Grand River Transit, busPLUS, MobilityPLUS operators, reservationists, fleet mechanics and service attendants, did not ratify the tentiative agreement reached between the region and union leadership.
The strike began as of 12:01 a.m. Sunday night, and bus service including Mobility PLUS and BusPLUS was to stop at 3 a.m. Monday morning.
ION train service will continue as it is maintained and operated by Keolis.
“Despite an offer that was competitive for GRT staff and affordable for residents, unfortunately we were not able to reach an agreement,” the news release from the Region of Waterloo said.
“The Region is committed to reaching an agreement and we remain open to discussions with the union.
“We appreciate that customers rely on transit on a daily basis and we will continue to update customers and residents with information as soon as it becomes available.”
