VICTORIA —
B.C. health officials are expected to provide a written update on new COVID-19 cases in the province on Tuesday afternoon.
The update comes one day after health officials announced more than 100 new COVID-19 cases over a three-day period.
A total of 102 cases were recorded between Friday and Monday, a steep rise that should serve as a warning, say health officials.
The discovery of more than 100 new cases over the weekend “is a lot more than we are comfortable with and something that we have to respond to,” said B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix Monday.
Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry stressed that it was important to follow basic health measures, like physical distancing, regular hand washing and staying home if feeling unwell as B.C. continues to reopen its economy.
She also encouraged young people to be cautious, as many of the recent cases have been confirmed in people in their 20s and 30s.
Health officials are asking British Columbians to be safe while out in the community and when meeting with friends. People should also be aware of who they are in contact with to assist with contact tracing, should they be exposed to the virus.
There have been a total of 3,300 cases of COVID-19 in B.C. since the pandemic began.
Meanwhile, 189 people have died of the virus.
Over the same period, 2,858 people have recovered from COVID-19 in B.C.
There are now 253 active cases of the virus in B.C., including 10 in the Island Health region.
This is a developing story, check back for updates.
