18,000 small businesses in Quebec could close due to pandemic, study says
Up to 158,000 small and medium-sized businesses are at risk of shutting down, including 17,933 in Quebec, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) says.
The figures do not include businesses that already closed their doors.
For Quebec, the estimate suggests about eight per cent of businesses are actively considering bankruptcy or winding down their business, the CFIB said.
That’s among the lowest proportion in Canada. Prince Edward Island has the lowest (four per cent) and Alberta the highest (19 per cent).
Across Canada, the most vulnerable sectors are arts and recreation (gymnasiums, performance halls, arcades), and accommodation and catering (restaurants, hotels, caterers), the CFIB said.
The organization estimated the number of companies at risk of failure using results from a survey conducted in late June and early July. Member companies were asked whether they were “actively considering bankruptcy/winding down” their businesses as a result of COVID-19.
