NASA is planning one of its biggest expedition in the history of space exploration as they’re currently working on a spacecraft. Psyche the latest spacecraft developed for the specific purpose of exploring Asteroid 16. One of the biggest well-known asteroids in the asteroid belt. The spacecraft has completed it’s critical design phase and soon to be deployed for exploring asteroid 16 Psyche.
Those who are wondering what makes this asteroid so special? for starters, this lone asteroid is worth more than the entire global economy of the world. Filled with the resources of pure metal abundant in the asteroid belt which is located between Mars and Jupiter. Is NASA planning on harvesting the metal from this particular asteroid belt? or does it contains more than just pure metal? To answer all these curious questions. Read on more to know more about the Asteroid 16 “Pysche” and what else does this asteroid holds secrets?
NASA’s main reason for visiting asteroid psyche?
The main reason which drove NASA to explore this particular asteroid is that its creation is mostly of Metallic iron, Nickel, and Gold core. Unlike other asteroid belts that are made primarily of ice and rocky substance. Psyche is completely different from others. Many experts believe that metallic iron and other precious metal s are most likely to be worth 10,000 quadrillion dollars. Which the whole population on earth can live comfortably for the rest of their lives. Researchers believe that the core of this asteroid is no different than planet earth. Hinting that it could be the dead planet where several collision damaged its outer layer due to some reason.
How long until this project come into fruition?
NASA is enlisting SpaceX help on developing Falcon heavy rockets to reach asteroid Psyche somewhere around 2022. The rocket is expected to cross Mars in 2023 and reach its destination by January 2026. Which a long wait is inevitable for the result of this project. NASA is also developing three instruments that will determine the nature of the asteroid. Which consists of multispectral imagers to capture images and learn more about the surface. As well as a magnetometer to measure the magnetic field of Psyche and spectrometer.
