The province reported 111 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Friday, bringing the total number of infections to 15,415 since March. Of those, 1,444 remain active, including 560 in the Alberta Health Services’ Calgary zone.
That’s 20 fewer active cases than in the Edmonton zone, which leads the province.
The new infections were based on 11,979 tests recorded on Thursday.
Across the province, 41 people remained in hospital due to COVID-19 infection, including six in intensive care.
The virus has claimed 253 lives in Alberta, including one new death reported on Friday in the Edmonton zone.
Hinshaw also provided an update surrounding COVID-19 infections in schools, roughly two weeks since children began returning to classrooms throughout the province.
There have been 29 schools across Alberta where an individual attended while infectious, with 32 cases linked to these schools.
Three school outbreaks remained active.
“Alberta Health Services is working closely with these schools to investigate any close contacts,” Hinshaw said.
“I want to reinforce that these schools are not a risk to their communities and those still attending are not at greater risk of exposure. Anybody potentially exposed has been contacted and is self-isolating.”
