Transit riders who fail to wear a mask will now get slapped with a $260 fine, OC Transpo says.
According to a memo sent out to city council by John Manconi, general manager of the transportation service department on Friday, special constables will be able to issue the fines as of Tuesday, October 13 under Operation Mask Up.
“As you are aware, the Province of Ontario is tightening restrictions in COVID-19 hot zones in the province, including Ottawa,” Manconi said. “OC Transpo special constables will now issue a fine of $260 to those customers not wearing a mask under the City’s mandatory mask policy and the transit by-law.”
However, Manconi says they recognize that there are some customers who are unable to wear a mask for a variety of reasons.
Young children and customers who may identify themselves as having a disability or medical condition that prevents them from wearing a mask will not be issued a fine.
“Customers who do not wear a mask and do not have any medical or other restrictions will be advised that they are not able to enter the system,” Manconi said.
