The Golden State Warriors are nearing a deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder to acquire Kelly Oubre Jr., ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports.
Oubre joined the Thunder on Monday as part of the Chris Paul to Phoenix blockbuster. Golden State will absorb his $14.4-million salary into its $17.2-million trade exception, Wojnarowski adds. Additionally, Golden State’s tax bill will jump from $66 million to a staggering $134 million following the deal, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.
The 24-year-old Oubre is coming off his best NBA season so far. He averaged 18.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.3 steals in 56 games before suffering a torn meniscus that held him out of the league’s restart inside the Orlando bubble.
He figures to fill a significant role for the Warriors in the absence of Klay Thompson, who was recently diagnosed with a torn Achilles tendon that is expected to sideline him for the entire 2020-21 campaign.
