Shipton did not say how many positive tests they were made aware of. The Oilers training camp began on Jan. 3 at the NAIT arena before moving to Rogers Place.
“We are committed to the health and safety of all participants in the 2020-21 NHL season and that includes our partners in the media. We are also committed to closely following NHL and AHS COVID protocols,” said Shipton.
Postmedia has confirmed none of its Edmonton sports reporters have tested positive for COVID-19, however it is awaiting for a number of test results to be returned.
Wednesday marks the first night of NHL action since the Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup at Rogers Place last September. The league plans to have a 56-game regular season with each team playing in their home arenas. Last year’s playoffs were played in two “bubbles” where players, coaches and staff were kept separate from the outside world.
The Dallas Stars’ season opener has been postponed after several players tested positive. The NHL had a total of 27 positive tests throughout the league’s various training camps, including 17 among the Stars organization.
It was unclear Wednesday if the positive tests in Edmonton caused any concern that Oilers games could be delayed.
