TOR Raptors 106 Final
Box Score
120 BOS Celtics

A. Baynes20 MIN, 8 PTS, 8 REB, 2 AST, 0 STL, 4-9 FG, 0-1 3FG, 0-0 FT, 0 BLK, 2 TO, -11 +/-

The Aaron Baynes homecoming game! Just kidding. Baynes didn’t do anything spectacular in his first game back in Boston, but he did do some things that helped his team succeed. Boxing out, tipping lose balls, setting good, hard screens and cleaning up garbage around the rim. But, he also blew a couple wide open layups, which cost him major brownie points. I’m not sure Boston fans missed this tribute video.

K. Lowry32 MIN, 24 PTS, 1 REB, 6 AST, 1 STL, 10-15 FG, 1-4 3FG, 3-3 FT, 0 BLK, 3 TO, -16 +/-

For an old guy (by NBA standards), Kyle looked pretty damn fresh on the second night of a B2B. Lowry picked up where he left off in Washigtion, keeping his team in a tough first quarter behind 10 points and 2 dimes in 7 minutes. Lowry eased into the flow of the game after that, but had his paw prints all over this one when it mattered in the 4th. He was yet again the Raptors best player, did all he could to ignite a spark, the flame just wouldn’t catch.

P. Siakam35 MIN, 23 PTS, 4 REB, 2 AST, 1 STL, 8-14 FG, 2-4 3FG, 5-7 FT, 0 BLK, 1 TO, -11 +/-

Siakam played well tonight. He shot the ball at an efficient clip, attacked the paint almost every time he touched the ball, and played solid defense on the Celtics wings. My biggest complaint with Pascal in this game, was that he didn’t demand the ball more. In a game that looked like a YMCA pick up run, Toronto could’ve used Siakam’s scoring – he was one of the only Raptors seemingly capable of that on this night.

F. VanVleet37 MIN, 5 PTS, 3 REB, 11 AST, 2 STL, 2-9 FG, 1-4 3FG, 0-0 FT, 2 BLK, 3 TO, -17 +/-

Fred looked like he was playing scared out there tonight. He was the furthest thing from assertive when he had the ball in his hands, and it ended up hurting his team. Not just because he failed to make much of an individual contribution, but because that lack of assertiveness caused Celtic defenders to play off of him, making it harder for his teammates to create. I’m not sure if he’s injured or what’s going on, but 2 consecutive games with under 10 field goal attempts is very very strange for Fred.

N. Powell31 MIN, 15 PTS, 4 REB, 0 AST, 0 STL, 6-15 FG, 0-4 3FG, 3-3 FT, 0 BLK, 1 TO, -6 +/-

It’s a make or miss league, and Powell was missing them tonight. He didn’t necessarily approach the game any differently than previous ones this season that he’s put up big numbers in, he just couldn’t make his shots

C. Boucher25 MIN, 12 PTS, 6 REB, 1 AST, 1 STL, 4-8 FG, 2-4 3FG, 2-4 FT, 5 BLK, 1 TO, -7 +/-

Chris Boucher and his anaconda arms were back at it again on Thursday night, seeking out shot blocking opportunities like his slender life depended on it. His activity on the defensive end helped keep his team in this game for certain stretches, but he didn’t reinforce it with the scoring that we know Boucher is capable of. Felt like we needed a 20-10 night out of Slimm Duck if we wanted to steal this one, but he was never able to get on a roll on offense.

D. Bembry22 MIN, 4 PTS, 1 REB, 2 AST, 0 STL, 2-2 FG, 0-0 3FG, 0-0 FT, 1 BLK, 0 TO, 1 +/-

Bembry came in when the Raps were on the wrong side of a big Boston run, and played some excellent defense. His boxscore is nothing to write home about, but Bembry might have some of Jayson Tatums facial hair stuck in his teeth after the game – that’s how closely he was draped all over him. Great work

S. Johnson16 MIN, 9 PTS, 3 REB, 0 AST, 2 STL, 3-5 FG, 1-3 3FG, 2-2 FT, 0 BLK, 2 TO, -4 +/-

You don’t always need to contribute counting stats to be a valuable asset to your team. Johnson was a fantastic example of that this evening. His perimeter defense was nothing short of brilliant, as he made things tough for Brown and Tatum for the entire time he was out there.

T. Davis13 MIN, 0 PTS, 1 REB, 1 AST, 0 STL, 0-3 FG, 0-1 3FG, 0-0 FT, 0 BLK, 0 TO, -3 +/-

If you didn’t notice TD out there in this one, don’t blame yourself. The stat line says it all. Not much in way of a positive contribution from the Raps mercurial reserve.

Nick Nurse

Box out, close out. Those are two things Nurse’s team didn’t appear prepared to do, or capable of doing in this game, and it really hurt them. The Raptors got out worked and out smarted on the glass and in the pain all night long. You kept waiting for a big adjustment from Nurse but it never really came.

Things We Saw

  1. Do the Toronto Raptors know how important preventing offensive rebounds is? The guys in red and black got absolutely destroyed on the offensive glass in this game, particularly in the 1st half – where the C’s scored 12 second chance points on 9 offensive boards.
  2. Communication on defense was flat out bad tonight. Semi Ojeleye and Payton Prichard were on fire from deep. They needed to be stopped, and for some reason the Raptors were incapable of not helping off them. They burned Toronto from deep all night long, and did so because they were wide open on most of their triples.

Kirk’s walk-off single in 11th inning lifts Blue Jays past Cardinals 4-3

Published

 on

TORONTO – Alejandro Kirk’s long single with the bases loaded provided the Toronto Blue Jays with a walk-off 4-3 win in the 11th inning of their series opener against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.

With the Cardinals outfield in, Kirk drove a shot off the base of the left-field wall to give the Blue Jays (70-78) their fourth win in 11 outings and halt the Cardinals’ (74-73) two-game win streak before 30,380 at Rogers Centre.

Kirk enjoyed a two-hit, two-RBI outing.

Erik Swanson (2-2) pitched a perfect 11th inning for the win, while Cardinals reliever Ryan Fernandez (1-5) took the loss.

Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman enjoyed a seven-inning, 104-pitch outing. He surrendered his two runs on nine hits and two walks and fanned only two Cardinals.

He gave way to reliever Genesis Cabrera, who gave up a one-out homer to Thomas Saggese, his first in 2024, that tied the game in the eighth.

The Cardinals started swiftly with four straight singles to open the game. But they exited the first inning with only two runs on an RBI single to centre from Nolan Arendao and a fielder’s choice from Saggese.

Gausman required 28 pitches to escape the first inning but settled down to allow his teammates to snatch the lead in the fourth.

He also deftly pitched out of threats from the visitors in the fifth, sixth and seventh thanks to some solid defence, including Will Wagner’s diving stop, which led to a double play to end the fifth inning.

George Springer led off with a walk and stole second base. He advanced to third on Nathan Lukes’s single and scored when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. knocked in his 95th run with a double off the left-field wall.

Lukes scored on a sacrifice fly to left field from Spencer Horwitz. Guerrero touched home on Kirk’s two-out single to right.

In the ninth, Guerrero made a critical diving catch on an Arenado grounder to throw out the Cardinals’ infielder, with reliever Tommy Nance covering first. The defensive gem ended the inning with a runner on second base.

St. Louis starter Erick Fedde faced the minimum night batters in the first three innings thanks to a pair of double plays. He lasted five innings, giving up three runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

ON DECK

Toronto ace Jose Berrios (15-9) will start the second of the three-game series on Saturday. He has a six-game win streak.

The Cardinals will counter with righty Kyle Gibson (8-6).

Canada’s Sarah Mitton captures shot put gold at Diamond League in Brussels

Published

 on

BRUSSELS – Canadian shot putter Sarah Mitton rebounded from a disappointing performance at the Paris Olympics by capturing Diamond League gold on Friday.

Mitton, of Brooklyn, N.S., won the competition, the final Diamond League event of the season, with a heave of 20.25 metres on her third throw.

Chase Jackson of the U.S. placed second with a throw of 19.90, while German’s Yemisi Ogunleye, the Olympic gold medallist, claimed bronze with a toss of 19.72.

Mitton, the runner-up of last year’s world championship, failed to qualify for the top eight in Paris.

Edmonton runner Marco Arop, who won silver for Canada in the men’s 800 metres at the Paris Games, was scheduled to race in the 800 on Saturday.

Olympic bronze-medallist Alysha Newman, of London, Ont., also competes Saturday in the women’s pole vault.
