
After nearly three months since the province recorded its last death from COVID-19, Manitoba announced on Tuesday that an eighth person has died of the virus.
The first person to die since May 5 was a man in his 70s in the Southern Health-Santé Sud health district.
Five new cases of the virus were also discovered as of Tuesday — one in Prairie Mountain Health, two in the Interlake-Eastern health region, one in Winnipeg and one in Southern Health. The five-day positive test rate is 0.4 per cent, with 405 cases having been diagnosed in total.
There was only one confirmed active case of COVID-19 in the province earlier this month, but that number has climbed to 78 active cases as of Tuesday. Three people are in hospital with the virus, with two of those people in intensive care.
After warning Manitobans earlier this week that possible exposure to the virus occurred at the Sherwood Grocery Store in Gull Lake on July 19, 20 and 21, the province has since revised the dates to July 20 and 21 only.
A temporary testing site is being set up in Killarney today through Friday in the front parking lot of the Tri-Lake Health Centre, and it will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.
Chief provincial public health officer Dr. Brent Roussin announced on Monday that he will only be giving media briefings on Mondays and during special circumstances going forward.
On Tuesday, Prairie Mountain Health announced the hours for the COVID-19 testing sites it runs for the upcoming Terry Fox Day long weekend.
The Brandon drive-thru testing site at The Town Centre mall parkade will be open from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Saturday. It will be closed on Sunday and open regular hours on Monday.
In Swan River and Dauphin, those communities’ testing sites will be closed Saturday and Sunday and open regular hours on Monday.
The temporary drive-thru testing site in Russell at the EMS building parking lot will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Friday.
