Comedy fans in Vancouver were treated to an unexpected delight on Friday night when veteran comedian and podcaster Marc Maron took the stage at the Jokes Please! show in Mount Pleasant.
A Star in the Making: Maron Tests New Material
Maron, currently filming an upcoming Apple TV series with Owen Wilson in Vancouver, surprised the crowd of 150 with a 30-minute set of fresh material. According to show organizer and host Ross Dauk, Maron “got a very warm welcome and he was truly hilarious.”
“He was working on a lot of new material,” Dauk said, “and you just don’t want audiences to go nuts over nothing. You want some real feedback. I think he enjoyed it. The audience loved it.”
This wasn’t Maron’s first time using the Jokes Please! stage to hone his material. He previously stopped by in June for a similar session.
The Comedian’s Playground: Jokes Please! Fosters Talent
Dauk explained that the comedy community is tight-knit, and comedians often share spots to workshop new jokes. Jokes Please!, now in its tenth year, has become a popular destination for this purpose. Over the years, top comics like Rory Scovel, Todd Barry, Beth Stelling, and Michelle Buteau have all graced the stage.
Dauk, a longtime fan of Maron, expressed his excitement about the surprise appearance. “I’ve seen him at his Vogue shows and stuff like that,” he said, “but he is also one of those comedians that if you see them in a smaller venue it can really amplify the personal nature of how he does comedy.”
Deep Dives and Local Laughs: Maron Covers a Range of Topics
Maron covered a range of topics in his set, including dating a much younger woman and exploring some darker aspects of his childhood. “He also spoke about his ailing dad and yeah, he covered some trauma stuff, some very dark things,” said Dauk. Vancouver itself even made an appearance in Maron’s routine, as audiences always appreciate local references.
A Full-Circle Moment for a Fan: Dauk on Working with Maron
For Dauk, the experience was particularly meaningful. “The thing with Maron…” he said, “is he also started the podcast when I started doing comedy, so I listened to his podcast the whole time.” Dauk, a longtime listener of Maron’s WTF podcast since its 2009 launch, added, “Whenever you work with a big comedian it’s fun but this one was pretty moving for me because I’ve been in lock step with this guy.”
Maron’s surprise appearance is a testament to the supportive and collaborative nature of the comedy community. Jokes Please! continues to be a launching pad for up-and-coming comedians, and even established stars like Maron recognize the value of testing new material in front of a live audience.
