OTTAWA (March 18, 2022) – In the 2021 Federal Election, Canada’s major political parties all made commitments to tackle housing and homebuying challenges in the country. The Liberal Party of Canada, under Prime Minister Trudeau, was re-elected on a mandate that featured objectives towards tackling housing sector issues.
Many aspiring and middle-class Canadians continue to be excluded from the home ownership market, in part due to market conditions but also as a result of the current regulatory framework for mortgage qualification and insurability. Mortgage Professionals Canada (MPC) is working with political decision-makers to advocate for implementation of certain recent election promises by major political parties which many agree will support first-time homebuyers and grow Canada’s middle class. MPC’s efforts include calling for changes to the insured mortgages purchase price limit, discussions regarding the mortgage qualification stress test mechanisms, and requesting reasonable additional entry options for mortgage insurance eligibility for first-time homebuyers.
MPC is the national mortgage industry association representing approximately 15,000 individuals and 1,000 companies. Their work represents approximately $120 billion dollars in annual economic activity. With its diverse and strong membership, MPC is respected and uniquely positioned when speaking to issues impacting all aspects of the mortgage origination process.
On Monday, March 21st 2022 at 10:00 am ET, MPC is holding a press conference at Parliament Hill. MPC board members will deliver remarks to the media on nature of meetings with senior decision-makers and comment on the state of the mortgage market in Canada. Following these remarks MPC will answer questions from the media.
