On Wednesday, the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers assured Canadians that they can have confidence in the food supply chain.
“The entire food industry, retailers, wholesalers, suppliers and distributors are working together, with all levels of government, to ensure our stores are open, stocked and that the products Canadians need will be available,” Tom Shurrie, the federation’s president and CEO, said in a news release.
In an interview, Chris Nash — president of the Alberta Motor Transport Association, which represents the province’s commercial trucking industry — said truckers are considered an “essential service” under the terms of the border closure and his industry will work to ensure the timely flow of goods between the two countries is maintained.
“Everything is moving right now, so that’s a good thing,” Nash said, adding truck drivers will take additional precautions when they travel, including social distancing and increased sanitization efforts. “Our goal is to keep getting store shelves stocked and product moving for those (businesses) who have the ability to keep operating.”
